Question

When Office Genuine Advantage Notifications (KB949810) tries to install, it comes back as a failed install. When I go through the WGA website, both my XP and office validate. Any ideas?

Hello MrDMA,
Please start by following the Windows Update troubleshooter on the Windows Update page.
If no success there, please have a look at the Windows Update Solution Center: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/ph/6527#tab0

Thank you for your reply, however my frustration continues. Here are the steps I followed as suggested by you:
Office 2003 Update fails to install with error 0x80070643
I checked my OSE service and it is indeed set to manual. - Not the problem.
I also checked 903774 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base . This is a XP fix, not an office fix, but I applied the suggestions on that KB page anyway.
Method 1: Register the Wups2.dll file
To register the Wups2.dll file in Windows, follow these steps:- Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
- Open the Command Prompt window. To do this, click Start , click Run , type cmd , and then click OK .
- At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
net stop wuauserv
- Register the Wups2.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:
- At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
Note For a computer that is running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, type the following command, and then press ENTER:regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll - Click OK if you receive a verification message.
- At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
- Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
net start wuauserv
- Exit the Command Prompt window. To do this, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
Method 2: Download and install the Windows Update Agent
For more information about how to download the latest version of Windows Update Agent, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:949104 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104/ ) How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage updates on a computer
I used method one mentioned above and tried method two but windows responded with "installation already exists" or "installation not needed".

Hello MrDMA,
You wrote, "This is a XP fix, not an office fix, but I applied the suggestions on that KB page anyway."
Even though the update that is being installed is an Office Genuine Advantage update, your issue is a problem with Windows Updates. If you continue to encounter problems, please follow up with the support options on the Windows Update Solution Center page.
