Importing records as update

Question
-
Hi,
I am using CRM 2011.
I exported around 16870 Accounts to a static worksheet and ticked 'Make this data available for re-importing' in order because I just want to update the records; there are no new records.
When I tried to import, I got the error concerning the file being too large. If I put the data in two files and import them, will it still update the records as expected?
Thank u!

As long as you are careful when splitting your file you should be OK. I tested by making a copy of the file I exported and deleted the appropriate rows from each file and was able to successfully import the 2 partial files.

I would maybe split the file into 3 batches of 5000 ish rows and try exporting and importing.

I had to make the file unprotected then saved it as protected again.
Does it affect anything?
Also, would this method affect in anything the number of records I already have?

Now I'm facing a HUGE problem! :S
When I did the update of the first batch, containing 2800 records, I noticed that these records were updated but ALL the others were updated with empty values due to that I deleted the records from the Excel sheet. I tried to fix it by updating a second batch, thinking that in this way I will 'refill' them, it deleted the ones I already have.
So now I'm left with Accounts with empty 'Account names' and other attributes.
It's REALLY urgent that I fix this!!!
I have the initial export file with all the records. Any help will be appreciated!

can you do an advanced find for accounts with a status of inactive.
hopefully you should find all the accounts there. If you look for ones with a modified date of yesterday then you should have just the accounts you deactivated recently.
Make all these accounts active again.

They didn't get deactivated, they are still active.
Here is a detailed description of what I did:
I am using CRM 2011.
I exported around 16870 Accounts to a static worksheet and ticked 'Make this data available for re-importing' in order because I just want to update the records; there are no new records.
When I tried to import, I got the error concerning the file being too large.I split the file in many files and did the update.
When I did the update of the first batch, containing 2800 records, I noticed that these records were updated but ALL the others were updated with empty values due to that I deleted the records from the Excel sheet. I tried to fix it by updating a second batch, thinking that in this way I will 'refill' them, it didn't. The error in the import log was that the records have been changed after the export have been done, actually they were (due to the first import, with empty values)So now I'm left with Accounts with empty 'Account names' and all the attributes which are in the excel sheet became empty, this in all the records except the first batch.
I have the initial export file with all the records.
How can I do a rollback, have the ability to import a large file thenimport it back.
It's really urgent :S
Thank you!

I realise this is an old post but as I'm sweeping up...
I suspect you deleted your rows but didn't delete the values in the 4 hidden columns (columns A-D - these contain info such as the unique GUID of the record) and that's why you effectively updated a big number of records to blank values.
You probably worked it out by now judging by the lack of further responses/cries for help but re-importing your original file in batches would have updated your records with the previous values.
