Opening documents/databases located on Windows Home Server from a remote location.

Question

Good day,
I'm trying to find information on opening documents and/or databases located on my Windows Home Server remotely, not using a Remote Desktop Connection. For example, I'd like to be able to open a file on my WHS from within Excel at work. I've tried various paths, but am presented with a "Choose Digital Certificate" prompt, which is blank. I have a Static IP assigned to my WHS machine on my local network at home, but do not have a Static IP provided by my ISP. Is this possible? My goal is to have several people scattered around the country be able to contribute to the same document(s) (not at the same time).
I appreciate any advice that can be offered.Monday, March 1, 2010 3:38 PM

Good day,
There is no way to "open" a file remotely OOTB. It's designed to be upload/download only. You can try using the WebFolders4WHS add-in to enable that functionality though.

If the upload/download solution that kariya21 mentions works for you, it sounds like you're still having an issue with your Home Server's website.
You don't need a static IP address from your ISP for WHS to work correctly. If your home server is configured correctly for remote access, you should have registered a website with a name like yourWebsite.homeserver.com. Your home server will automatically update that website with it's current IP address from your ISP so that you don't have to worry about that part. You can verify this part is working correctly by going to Settings in your WHS Console and selecting the Remote Access setting. There are tools there to verify that Remote Access and your website are configured correctly. Normally WHS will even configure your router correctly, though not all routers support this.
There are many posts about configuring remote access on these forums if that is not set up correctly.
As far as the "Choose Digital Certificate" prompt goes...I feel like that's come up before as well, but I don't really know much about it, I'll let others chime in if they know more about it.
Good luck!Monday, March 1, 2010 5:54 PM -
I'll look into the WebFolders4WHS and see if that does the trick for me.
As far as the Remote Access functionality of my WHS... it's all working correctly, I was just looking for a way to create a URL to a specific document, so that if I was to, from within Excel, enter the URL in the filename field in the Open dialog, I'd get a credentials prompt. After entering the proper credentials, the file would download and open within Excel.Monday, March 1, 2010 6:26 PM -
It looks like the WebFolders4WHS did the trick. After getting it installed and setup, I was able to add it as a "Network Place" using the "Map Network Drive" function on my office machine (WinXPPro). When accessing the network place, I am prompted for credentials (only between office machine reboots) and once entered, the folder structure looks just like a typical explorer window. Any Excel document has it's associated icon and when double-clicked, opens within Excel. I make my edits and save, and it simply saves back to that web folder at home on my WHS.
