Windows Vista update doesn't work

    Question

  • I have Vista Home Premium.  All of a sudden it is no longer updating.  I get, "Windows could not search for new updates.  An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.  Error(s) found: Code 80070426  Windows Update encountered an unknown error."

Another forum user advises to download the WGA Diagnostic Tool and post the WGA Diagnostic  data.  I did so, yielding the information below.  Needless to say, I haven't the foggiest idea of what any of it means.  Can anyone offer some input?

Your computer was manufactured almost a year before Vista was released. – it almost certainly cannot therefore have a valid OEM_SLP installation of Vista.
The Software Licensing Service is not running – it’s presumably been disabled to prevent notification.

For which version and edition of Windows is the computer licensed, according to the COA sticker on the case? What is the EXACT wording  of the sticker? (but do NOT post the Key)
