  • Question

  • Having purchased a build to order system back in 2002 from PC WORLD,  with XP installed and validated, and recently having to reisnstall from the 'Recovery' disk, it has recently requested the validation key. The one printed on the rear of the tower is not recognised as the authentic key. It is XP Home edition and reads DSG on the sticker.

  • Anonymousandangry,

The Product Keys on the CoAs of major manufacturer computers have been removed from the online activation database to reduce the chance of someone copying your Product Key, putting it on an unauthorized installation of XP, and then activating it (which would deactivate your installation).

In order to activate your installation of XP, please do a Telephone Activation.  Have a read here for more info:  http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1429822&SiteID=25

  • Thanks for the reply. I have already tried to activate via the Phone, but with no success.  I have the key, which is on the decal at the rear of the tower, and was asked to input this key so that XP could generate a new set of numbers so that an activation code could be given, but XP will not accept the original key from the decal.
