Windows 7 Genuine Advantage Validation error 0x8004fe21 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, this update and seemingly every other Microsoft update or product fails during installation.

I ran MGA Diagnostics but got the error "Failed to create output files, hr=0x800706b5. Please contact support." when I hit copy.

It copied anyway but thought I should mention that.

  • The error you have is often caused by filesystem problems...

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • I thought I'd replied to this yesterday :(

There's no record of any SFC having run in the log??

Please post the Application and System event logs to your public SkyDrive and I'll take a look...

    C:\Windows\System32\winevt\logs\System.evtx

    C:\Windows\System32\winevt\logs\Application.evtx

    (compress them first, please!)

  • Please check your system clock - both logs cease recording on 7/2/2013, so either the clock is wrong, or the service hasn't run since then.

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.

  • You have/had a major infection - probably by ZeroAccess.

You may want to consider a clean install as a solution, as this may need considerable work to get the system back up and running properly again.

As a start, please download and install  Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from  http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM PRO' at the end of the installation -  and update it, then run a full scan  in your main account, and Quick scans in every other user account.

    Delete everything it finds
