SyncToy 2.1, Windows 7 64 Bit - Sync issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • InstalledSyncToy 2.1 on Desktop.  Did not install on Laptop.  Tried to sync My Pictures folders between Desktop and my Laptop.  Both systems Windows 7 64 bit.  Browsed to find folders on both Left & Right (right being laptop and destination).  Found both folders. (Laptop My Pictures empty at time of syncing and want to keep full copy of desktop files here.)  It appears to run but shows failed for all files and subfolders and pics.

  • Hi UnsureAsToBestWayTerry,

Thank you for choosing SyncToy. I’m afraid this kind of issue is caused by the limited permission. Would you please follow the next two steps to check the file permission and give me the detail information?

First, you’d better confirm whether you have permission to get access to Laptop from Desktop. Because net connection and file permission is necessary for SyncToy’s syncing. For instance, you can copy a simple file by Windows explorer from Desktop to Laptop or from Laptop to Desktop manually. If it fails, I’m afraid you will check the net connection and the file permission.

Second, if it passes, but still fails when syncing, would you please copy the detail log and the SyncToy warning here, which I could make a deeply analysis?

  • Hi Danish
I'm having a similar problem with synctoy ver 2.1.0.0 that I've not seen with the older versions of synctoy but recently migrated to Windows 7, everytime I sync a number of files (different ones everytime) always show up with the following error:

"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process exception form HRESULT 0x80070020 ..........."

Running Windows XP on laptop and Windows 7 on desktop pc

when I go and check the individual documents, all are Word, Excel, PDF's etc. so no running files in sync folder. I find that the changes have transferred to the older documents correctly and its an incorrect error that is being reported.

The folders contain approx 35,000 files that I'm checking to be synched

    Example Log below

    SYNC: 01/16/2010 09:26:52:249: SyncToy run of Laptop Synch (Z:\, E:\Laptop\LapTop Synch\) completed at 16/01/2010 09:26:52.

  • Thanks for the reply.  Sorry for delay in responding but hadn't checked to see if anyone had replied (too bad it doesn't notify :) )
Part of the issue was due to Permissions not being set wide open enough on the laptop.  After I did so, was able to run sync.  Unfortunately, I ended up with close to a 10% fail rate :(  As I was syncing to have a copy of my pic files also on my laptop (as a backup), and as I have approx. 10,000 pic files, I'll now need to check and see which files weren't copied.  I checked a couple of the files which the log indicates weren't copied, but I see they are on the laptop as well as the desktop where I sync copied from.  I also ran the sync again to see if it would pick up these 940 +- pics, but the second sync basically stated no sync of pic files as no new files found.

I'm attaching a copy of part of the log which shows the 'failed files'.  As you can see, the first few (4-5) failed files which were related to my Palm Expansion card and I wasn't concerned about these as not important; the next 935 'ERROR failed' files were of concern in view of fact several are old pics which I certainly don't want to lose.

I looked at the file names on the log of a few of the Error or 'failed', and it would appear they were transferred, notwithstanding it stating 'failed'.  I guess I will need to check all 940 Error or 'failed' files in order to ensure they were copied, unless there is a way to ensure they have been copied to the laptop.
BTW, I also did a quick comparison of all the Pic subfolder sizes on both laptop and desktop and they appear to be of same size, notwithstanding the indication by SyncToy of 940 +_ ERROR 'failed' to sync.

Here is copy of the SyncToy Log:
    SyncToy run took 03:02:21:531.
Copied 10,079,041,894 bytes in 12,078 files in 03:02:21:531.
Bytes per second 921,172.9, files per second 1.1.
    Warning: 943 failures occured.
You can retry by selecting "Run" again or select "Preview" to see
the operations that remain to be performed.

  • Hi, UnsureAsToBestWayTerry

Can you notice the Error Code said that the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. So, before your syncing, could you make sure no other programs are reading the pic which you will sync, since SyncToy will not sync the file which is "read lock" by another process and then throw a  error here.

    Thanks.

  • Good morning, Danish...
I noticed that it said it was used by another process, but I didn't have any other program running that I'm aware of.
Any way to check in case something running in background I'm not aware of?
Also, why then would I find it on the other drive when I go and check?  (only checked a couple and don't want to check all 950 +- if possible :(

  • Danish Wang,
Was there any reason for the error code? I am running a desktop and a laptop both running Vista Ultimate 64 bit and also a Windows Home Server system. I am running the 32bit version of synctoy 2.1 on both the laptop and desktop. I get the same error code...."The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process exception form HRESULT 0x80070020 ..........." My files still copy between all three but it scares me as in losing files. I lived threw the initial WHS problems and lost some valuable materialand was wondering if you have any ideas of what is causing this?
                                                                                                                                Thanks Again,

  • working on laptop windows 7 x64 getting the same error "Error: Unknown error. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070020)" after the last patches last week...  hoping for a fix soon!

  • I see the same multiple "Error: Unknown error. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070020)".  Looks like a spurious error as it happens on 1st sync of new files but then files do actually copy correctly.   Later syncs seem to work without errors.  However it is alarming and didn't happen in earlier versions of sync toy.

    Using version 2.1 on windows 7 x64.

Is Microsoft working on a fix??  Is there a better place to submit a bug report?

    Thank you,

    Jon.

  • The exact same happens here. Windows7x64, Synctoy 2.1, no other programs running.

"Error: Unknown error. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070020)"

Is a reason known? Is it potentially disturbing the synchronisation? And is a fix underway?

    Thanks!

  • Same problems here running Windows Vista 32 bit.  I started to have the problem with SyncToy 2.0 and upgraded to 2.1 to see if it helps, but no, the error messages keep coming.  I recently upgraded to gigabit ethernet so I went back to my old switches but the problem stays the same.  The only recent software changes on the system have been via Windows Update, except for Kaspersky, I can't remember if I did the change to Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 before or after the errors started.  I will see if I can switch off Kaspersky and try again.

    Thanks

  • Same problem, Windows 7 64 bit and Sync Toy 2.1 (64), also running Kaspersky Internet Security 2010. I was using sync toy 1.4 on Win XP SP3 with Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 with no problems though.

  • Have done some quick tests and pausing Kaspersky does seem to stop the error messages.  It must be quite marginal as my laptop also has Vista 32 and Kaspersky and has no problem.

  • Just to complete the thread.  Go here and apply the fix suggested by Kaspersky:

    http://support.kaspersky.com/kis2010/fileav?qid=208280425

For me Synctoy is in C:/Program Files/SyncToy 2.1/
