Time Allocation on Resource Plans RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are with with PS 2010 and using the resource plans and have seen behavior which is unexpected and I hope someone can explain. When entering time for a generic resource I understand why the system will allow me to enter > 1 FTE b/c I am have more than one of those resources

But when I have a named resource with a proper calendar associated why does the resource plan allow me to enter and save put >1 FTE and the equivalent in hours or days. I have one resource that has 19FTE assigned and another with 10000 hours in 2 a month period?

Bug or working as designed? If it's working as designed, um, why is it designed that way?

    Thanks,

    Dave

  • Dave,

Resource Plans are a 'planning' feature. they do not 'validate' the information you put in. The system does not prevent you from over-allocating a resource, whether it is project plans or resource plans. It does 'flag' them as overallocated both in the project plan and the resource availability data. It is the job of the Resource Manager and PM to work and resolve those over-allocations.

Consider this scenario: Lets assume your FTE =8 hr/day, and you need Bob to work 16 hours on a specific day because of something mission-critical. DO you want the system to put a hard stop on allocating that resource for more than 1 FTE? I would say, I want the system to allow it, but flag it, so that action can be taken to address the issue.
