Windows failed validation, bought computer with Home edition, after repair has Pro edition. How to fix? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought this computer from Circuit City maybe 5 or 6 years ago.  It is an "emachine" T2862. According to the COA, it should have Windows XP Home Edition on it, but it has Windows XP Pro.  I have had it repaired a couple of times in the past, so I am guessing that it was changed then.  How do I get it changed back to Windows Home Edition and get it validated?

  • Hello Sonjafe,

Your best bet is to see if eMachines has the recovery kit in stock to sell you:  https://secure.tx.acer.com/RCDB/Main.aspx?brand=emachines

    If not, try www.restoredisks.com.

You can also use the genuine Microsoft hologrammed XP Home Edition installation CD provided to customers purchasing systembuilder/small manufacturer computers.  If you can acquire one of these CDs, you install using the CD and the Product Key on the eMachines Certificate of Authenticity (do not use the Product Key that came with the CD).  Then do a teelphonic activation rather than an online automatic activation.
