"CD key you entered is invalid. Please try again." RRS feed

  • Question

  •     I just received a new copy of XP Professional that I purchased through Amazon to replace the XP Media Edition I currently have on my laptop. When I try to install the new product I receive the message "CD key you entered is invalid. Please try again." I have verified that I am using the Product Key on the back of the folder the software came in, yet it will not allow me to install. This is as far as the installation CD will allow me to go. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

  • Montresor48,

Are you doing a clean installation or trying to do a repair reinstallation or inplace upgrade?

Note that you cannot repair or upgrade XP Media Center Edition with XP Pro, you have to offload your data and then do a clean installation.

  • I erroneously tried to repair a version Dell OEM version of XP Media Center with a fully licensed XP Pro version.  Now I"m getting the 'Invalid CD Key' error. Is there a way to back out of the XP Pro repair and return to XP Media Center version?
