WHS Console RRS feed

  • Question

  • After I log onto the WHS Console the main page is blank. The WHS Network indicates that it is healthy and I can log onto the server via a home computer or via a web page but either way I cannot gain access to the console.

  • Kim,
It's the McAfee software. After it's installed, it has to index every file on the server, and with the HP server having such limited capabilities, it cannot do anything else while this is going on. The other download, (PV Connect?), also does the same thing, but not quite as badly, so the majority just leave the server for some time until it's indexing is complete.
The majority of people who had this download sent to them, have ended up removing it, as it just uses too much of the available processes.

  • I would advise against using Add/Remove Programs to uninstall an add-in. It will uninstall the software, and the tab will disappear from the tab bar, but in settings the add-in may still show as installed. Even with the extra activity on the server, the console should eventually open, but it might take a very long time.

Do you have multiple PCs in your household?  If so, is it the same from each one of them?  Has it ever worked?  What OSes are you connecting from?  Please provide more info.

  • Yes, so far I have connected a Vista machine and an XP sp3 and have had the identical resultys on each. It has worked in the past but ceased soon after installing the MacAffe trial software. I have now noticed that the same thing occurs on the MacAffe console. I jave tried uninstalling the software on my PC but still have the problem. I also get the same result using remote access.

  • Did you try the reset console option which appears below the password field under options?
Does it fail also, if you login via RDP or with attached monitor to your server and get the console up?

  • It still fails via RDP. and I have tried resetting the console with no success. I'm going to see if I can figure out how to uninstall the McAfee software from the server since I can't gain access through the console.

Thanks for the response. My wife and liced in Germany south of Stuttgart many years ago.

  • Any clues on how to remove the McAfee software since I cannot gain access through the console? Thanks for the response, I think we're headed in the right direction.

  • Kim,
You could try a remote desktop into your server, then Start - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs, see if it's listed as a 'normal' program. It should be, I would guess.
Note that if it's still performing it's indexing, it could be a very slow operation, so it might be worthwhile, once you have the remote desktop connection open on your server, of using Task Manager, and stopping the McAfee process first.

  • I had (have) a similiar experience but was able to run the console from RDC.  Once I did that, the console re-appears.
