Vista Suddenly given 'Not Authentic' error code, Validation Failed.

Question

I'm experiencing the same problem as most here....I've had my laptop for nearly a year HP Pavillion, and had no issues (even been validated before on occasion). Now suddenly i keep receiving the error code about windows being not authentic.I run Vista, and the software came installed on the machine at purchase. Also, I was unable to create rescue discs, and laptop didn't come with any either.System Restore worked to restore my computer to an earlier date, which allows the laptop to function, but i'm receiving the bug screen more and more.PLEASE HELP! Hello teenieteenez,
The problem is that your Vista's Software Licensing Service has stopped. Vista uses this service to check itself and confirm it is Genuine. When the service is stopped, Vista is unable to confirm it's own Genuine status and may show Genuine or Non-Genuine. The fact that the Service has stopped is also, most likely, the cause of other issues you may be experiencing (such as not having access to the Control Panel).
Normally this is not a big problem, since you can just restart the Service. However, we have seen a number of users that receive an error when they attempt to restart the Service. This indicates a more serious 'root cause' to the service having stopped.
What I would like you to do is to try to restart the service using the 'Service Restart' steps, below. If the service won't restart, you will receive an error. If you receive an error, post the exact error message in this thread.
Also tell me if you are using a 32 or 64bit version of Vista and if you have recently used any kind of 'Registry Cleaner' program (and if so, which one)
Service Restart steps:
If you have access to the Start button:
1) Click the Start button
2) Type: cmd in the Start Search field
3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe
4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
5) Type: net start slsvcIf you do not have access to the Start button:
1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser
2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field
3) Find the file cmd.exe
4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
5) Type: net start slsvc
Note: If you receive error "System error 3 has occurred. The system cannot find the path specified." then go to the main Vista Validation Forum page http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/threads/, the first link under "Announcements" titled "Fix for ‘Software Licensing service Has Stopped’ on some Vista 64bit systems" has steps that should fix your issue.
Thank you,
Darin MS

Id failed to mention due to my limited time yesterday, that after reading through the forums prior, i'd tried restarting the service. It didn't work. I then tried the next step in the instructions, even though i didnt receive the same error message listed. After i'd created and run the .reg file, i tried to restart the service, which did in fact start. I then simultaneously began typing my original post on the forum, which was a thank you for fixing my issue, and rerunning the windows Validation service. Needless to say, before id finished the message i'd realized that though the service did in fact restart, the problem still existed.
I have also been using a program that i suspect may have deleted the registry key. It's called CCleaner version 2, and i've used it many times and not experienced problems until these recently.
When i try now to follow the instructions in your last post, the error i receive says:
The software licensing service couldnt be started. A system error has occurred. System error 57346 has occured. The system cannot find message text for message number 0xe002 in the message file for BASE.
Thank you again for ur help!

Hi teenieteenez,
Just to confirm, you are still experiencing a Non-Genuine issue?
If so, go ahead and re-generate a new Diagnostic Report so I can see if anything has changed since you followed those steps.
Thanks,
Darin MS

Hi teenieteenez,
We have found that there are actually a number of different types of the "Software Licensing Service has stopped (and won't restart)" issue. We clasify them by what error message the user gets whe he/she tries to restart the service.
We have a fix (and a root cause) for the "System error 3, The system cannot find the path specified." type. But we do not yet have a fix for the "System error 57346, The system cannot find message text for message number 0xe002 in the message file for BASE." type.
If you are willing, I would like to have my Engineer contact you directly to troubleshoot the issue.
To do this, we will need you to go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029 and create a (no cost) Service Request and then post the SR's Confirmation Number in this thread. (Be sure to include, in your SR, an email address and/or a phone number that we can contact you at).
Thank you!,
Darin MS
