It says that my product code is not compatable with Vista Ultimate.. I have not got vista ultimate and have not asked for it either. I no longer have a start menu or a desk top function. The only function available is the Internet! What has happened and how can I fix it, Pls help I'm not great with technology!!

  • Hello Laura-Jane,

That is very odd,  Windows is not usually able to upgrade itself on it's own.  Is it possible that someone that has access to the computer could have launched the Anytime Upgrade (maybe by accident) and upgraded to Ultimate or have you had the computer repaired recently (by a repair shop or maybe by a friend or that smart kid down the street)  In the course of repairing, they may have had to reinstall windows but installed the wrong version?

In addtion, would you download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this thread.

If you do not have access to the Start Button:

    1) Login to Vista and click the option that brings up Internet Explorer.
    2) Type: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 into the browser address bar.
    3) A window will come up asking if you want to “Run” or “Save”, Select “Run”
    4) When the program runs, click the “Continue” button, then click the “Copy” button.
    5) Return to this thread http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/thread/8aebfa78-4d82-442f-9dd4-5f548fc097a7.
    6) In a reply post, paste the Diagnostic Report.

    Thank you,
