Product Key Incorrect with Brand New Compaq Laptop with Windows7 Home Premium RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, can someone PLEASE HELP me as soon as possible. I purchased a new laptop as I am travelling Interstate next week, and the store said it had a 60 Day Trial for Windows 7 including Microsoft Outlook for emails. Outlook shows that I ONLY have 10 more times to open the emails and it will stop. I will definitely NEED to use the email program prior to - AND a number of times each day when I am away. I am now in "PANICK" mode. Would someone please be kind enough to advise me on what to do. The 25 digit Product code I tried to use is on the sticker under the laptop.

It is almost Midnight here in Australia, and I can only stay up for another hour so. If I can't receive an answer tonight I will check the emails early morning.  Many Thanks in anticipation of some help.

  • Hello JanMGardens,

You wrote, "and the store said it had a 60 Day Trial for Windows 7 including Microsoft Outlook for emails. Outlook shows that I ONLY have 10 more times to open the emails and it will stop."

Regarding Windows, your HP/Compaq computer has a perpetual OEM SLP license for Windows 7 Home Premium installed.  It is not a Trial, it will never expire, so no worries there.

The computer DOES however have a Trial installation of the 2007 Microsoft Office System.  You cannot activate and convert this Trial to a perpetually licensed product by using the product key on the bottom of the laptop because that product key is your alternate Windows 7 Home Premium product key to be used when directed by tech support--it is not intended or expected that this product key would activate Office or any other program besides the installed Windows 7 Home Premium.

It is my understanding that Microsoft no longer sells product keys online to activate Trials of Office 2007, because they have recently introduced Office 2010.

If you would rather stick with Office 2007, then you need to purchase either a product key in the form of a MediaLess Licensing Kit (your Trial installation of Office 2007 is the type that can be activated into one of three different editions of Office with the corresponding MediaLess Licensing Kit (MLK), which may be available at the store you purchased the computer from) to activate your installed Trial of Office 2007, or you need to purchase a leftover full retail copy of the Office 2007 edition you like from a local store, then uninstall the existing Trial, then install the full retail packaged product using the included discs and product key.

If you would like to use Office 2010, then simply download a Trial copy of the edition of Office 2010 that interests you from the Microsoft Office Trial site:  http://www.office.com  You will want to uninstall the Office 2007 Trial and restart the computer before you install the Office 2010 Trial.  This proces is not programmed to affect your documents and email in any way, but it's always a good idea to back up your docs and email before making such a big change to your computer.  At any time during the Office 2010 Trial you can convert the Trial to a perpetually licensed installation by following the instructions in this Office Help article:  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-help/convert-a-trial-version-of-an-office-2010-suite-or-program-to-a-full-retail-version-HA101886436.aspx
