MS-MPI Documentation? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm aware of https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb524831(v=vs.85).aspx which links to:

    • the MS MPI release notes,
    • a reference of the MPI enumerations, functions and structs,
    • this forum,
    • a tutorial
    • and a few other resources that seem less relevant.

I'm wondering, is there more documentation specifically about the mpiexec and smpd programs and e.g. firewalls?

For example the tutorial mentions "Make sure you add the necessary firewall rules for your application."
Even running a simple hello world MPI program locally seems to require such firewall rules.
Is there any more documentation about that?

I found mpiexec -help2 and -help3 that describe a bunch of options and environment variables. Is that the only / best place to learn about these?

smpd -help is unfortunately considerably more terse.

Should the MPICH documentation be consulted?

    Thanks.

  • We do not have specific documentation for smpd.exe. All the options that you see in smpd -help are the supported options. Is there any feature in particular that you are looking for? mpiexec -help3 lists all the officially supported environment variables for MS-MPI. While some other environment variables not documented by mpiexec -help3 might change the behavior of MS-MPI, these behaviors are not guaranteed to be consistent between different versions of MS-MPI.

  • Hi,

If you are using HPC Pack Cluster to run your MPI application, you can use "hpcfwutil.exe" to register your MPI application. Details of the tool is available here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg243461(v=ws.11).aspx

And if you are running MPI application on the azure nodes, this doc will also help: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh859817(v=ws.10).aspx

  • I'm not using HPC Pack Cluster. But from that first link at least I found mpexec documentation at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc947675(v=ws.11).aspx

(Why is that not linked from the MS-MPI page https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb524831(v=vs.85).aspx ?)

But I still see no documentation on smpd.exe.
