Product Key Already in Use after days of working. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Okay, so I bought Windows Vista Ultimate online, and it got here a few days ago. I backed up some music and Instant Messenger stuff, formatted, and then Installed Vista. I entered the Key I got with it, and that worked. Then I finished the installation, and tried to Activate it online after I installed my Wireless cards drivers. It failed, something about the Activation server failing. So I used the automated phone system, and that worked great, got activated, and I was off. I started to explore Vista and downloaded all the Updates (except language packs). As of yesterday, it said that something about my Harware had changed, and I needed to re-activate. Well I didn't open my computer up and change anything or add anything (unless my MP3 player counts as a hardware change). So I tried online again, and same error, the server failed. It was too late for me to call, because I would wake up family members. So today I tried online again, this time the server worked, but, came back with my product key being already in use. I hope I'm the only one that has it, and like other people have said, the key never left my desk. I build my own computers, like this one, and do alot of harware changing, but since I've upgraded to Vista, I have not changed anything.

I ran the tool in the sticky above, and was confused about some of the results. Apparently my Validation Control is not Installed. I was able to Validate via the http://microsoft.com/validation site, and it said I was validated and that the Genuine parts of Windows would work now, but my computer still tells me I have 2 days before my computer gets disabled.

Here are the results of my MGA tool:

Also, I don't get why it says Administrator: No, because I'm the only user on this computer, and that's the Administrator User i set up during installation. But that seems to not be a problem with the UAC questions.

Thanks in advance, and please, the faster I can get this fixed, the better, because apparently I'm on a time constraint.

EDIT: Tried format/re-install, still same error. I'm wondering if my key was copied down before it was sent to me. Is there any way somebody can look that up and perhaps deactivate the other computer? This is the ONLY computer I have installed Vista on.

  • YES! I did that Diagnostics from that link. Ran activation again, entered my key, and hit activate online, but it said the error was already in use, so I remember that some posts said to hit "Next" instead of Activate online now. So I did that, I'm ACTIVATED!

    THANKS!!!!

EDIT: I ran the MGA tool again, just in case you all wanted to see that it's PROOF that this worked!!

  • Uh oh... Now it's saying I have 3 days to Activate again (this seemed to happen after my screen saver, I'm thinking that the supposed "Hardware Change" was Windows turning my Monitor off).

I tried to re-activate but it's telling me its already in use again. I'm trying to Remove my Product Key from the installation, but I can't, because that was I can enter a new one and hit NEXT instead of Activate becuase that always works... I ran the MGA Tool again and here it is:

EDIT: I tried that link again, and that didn't help. Just said thankyou for validating. The MGA tool says I'm Genuine too... It's just saying the key is already in use. Is there a way Microsoft can Purge the key from the "Product Keys In use" thing so I can re-activate?

EDIT2: I called up Microsoft and tried to do phone activation, then that failed, then I talked to a person, answered some questions, and now it works, she read me back the key like the computer would, but this time she did some override on the system and voila, Activated.

  • Hello,

Have you installed any new hardware or updated any drivers recently?  Are you running a RAID?

    Thanks

  • I am having the Same problem with Windows Vista Ultimate and a RAID 1 array. It tells me that the copy of Vista on my second mirror drive is illegal. I purchased this from a computer builder in New York, and had no idea that Microsoft could pull that kind of prank on us. I still haven't activated my second drive, and would like to do that and start to boot on the first drive again. What is the telphone number where you actually got ahold of a real human to talk to tell them about the problem and get a resolution. This whole thing really stinks. I have found some good information from the Microsoft site, and that may help me get around this. I hope that they can start a "Class Action Lawsuit" against Microsoft on this issue. I guess the fact that you will have two copies of the operating system on your computer bothers Microsoft. You can only use one at a time, so I can't see any problem. I had used my computer for 3 months, and my mirror drive wasn't hooked up which wasn't a short term problem. The company that built my computer for me did not format an extra drive that I had installed for back ups, and either forgot to install or else did not install a SATA 1 connector tightly enough. I wanted to buy a super computer, but it has been a nightmare in the past few weeks.
