XP MCE not sure if activated / Says not WGA. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, i have a windows xp MCE which has been on my PC since about a year ago now. All has been fine, i have done various wipes in the past year due to my system becoming slow and less reliable. Recently i had to wipe during a weekend because my pc became unbearably slow, but when i reinstalled, it was still extremely slow. Not knowing if i had messed up my install i tried again. Still it seamed slow and irresponsive, so i did a virus scan once setup and it found multiple virus/trojans in a partition, i removed them, but decided to wipe my partitions also so i could start a complete fresh without any virus's. This time, once i installed windows i tried to activate and it seemed to active, so since then i havnt been asked to activate although in the Start > Accessories > System Tools > Activation is still there, and when clicked doesnt do anything. I am guessing i have activated XP, my main problem is now my WGA says that my Windows Version isnt genuine, when it definately is because i have the disks and key code here.

I am guessing it is because i have wiped multiple times over one weekend and Microsoft thinks i am installing on multiple computers. Is there anything i can do to sort this?

Also, this morning, while i was booting up i was told i had 7 Days left to activate windows, although i thought i had already activated. So i am not sure what to do.

Thanks, hopefully i will get this sorted.

  • Aden13fraser,

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of  Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

You should (at a minimum) be able to telephone activate easily. Does the activation dialogue box come up at all anymore (when you try to activate via the start-menu/control panel)?

  • Aden,

As Phil stated you should be able to telephone activate your MCE. IN turn I would like to add some additional info.

Please activate Windows XP MCE by calling a Microsoft customer service representative. The Activation Wizard displays the toll free number that you can dial.

To contact a Microsoft customer service representative and activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

    1. Click “Start”, point to” All Programs”, point to “Accessories”, point to” System Tools”, and then click “Activate Windows”.
Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area.

    2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.

    3. Click “Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement”, click “Back”, and then click “Next”
    4. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box and then click “Next”.
Note:  The number appears now and differs based on the location that you select.

    5. Once activation is completed and you receive the following message, click “OK”.
You have successfully activated your copy of Windows.
More information on how to activate Windows XP at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307890
Also you may reference the following site for various telephone activation centers:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851.If you are done with the activation, kindly proceed in validating the copy of your software by going to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  Click “Validate Windows” button.
Please post again if you need further assistance. Thank you.

I still cant activate xp. I have just got back from holiday and xp still isnt activated and i cant logon without activating it, but the activation window doesnt open.

I dont know what to do, i cant activate by phone without the phone number and the activation window.

Also, i dont have the sticker from the back of my pc, due to changing PC case last year and when trying to remove it, it was ripped and unreadable so was put in the bin.

I took the serial number and wrote it down, but didnt write anything else down as i didnt think i needed it and couldnt read most of it anyway.

I have activated windows twice before, with my address, name and info so maybe i can support?

    Please help,

I have no idea what to do.
