  • Could you provide more information such as is this an HP WHS or a custom-built WHS?

If it a custom-built computer, you will need to know what interface you want.  Most PCs have a free PCI card.  Here's a list at NewEgg of PCI Express and PCI cards.  There's a 4 port SATA PCI card for $18!

Now, I do not know about the HP WHS machine.  Others here could chime in.

  •  Some things to think about when buying a SATA controller for WHS:

    1. You want the controller to have no mandatory configuration, especially before getting to Windows (and therefore a GUI). Plugging in a keyboard and monitor is impractical at best, and impossible for some OEM home servers. So you want to avoid "RAID" capable cards and stick with a straight pass-through controller. Non-RAID cards are cheaper anyway. Some RAID-capable cards can be downgraded by flashing with the non-RAID firmware (be careful with this, obviously).

    2. Most cheap SATA controllers are going to be SATA I and not SATA II, and they'll be PCI cards. Most SATA II disks work with SATA I controllers (sometimes you need a jumper on the disk), but you'll need to make sure that your motherboard has a free slot of the appropriate type.

    3. Anything with eSATA is awesome. External USB disks are a bit flakey in my opinion; external SATA disks are solid. Be careful that enabling the eSATA port on the card doesn't disable an internal port at the same time.

I'm using a cheap Silicon Image 3114-based controller in my server (very similar to the $18 card mentioned above), and it works great. No issues at all.

  • I have a (Silicon Image) SIL3124-4 Port SATA II PCI/PCI-X  in my homebuild WHS, no problem with it.

  • Can I have the catalog number of the SIL3124 and manufacturer of the PCI-express card above? I have WHS PP3 on Dell PowerEdge T110.  I recently bought a HighPoint Rocket 622A and installed it at a PCI-express slot.  The device could not start.  The device manager shows the yellow triangle, suggesting that the driver is wrong. However, I have tried the newest drivers from the company web site.  So, I am thinking about buying and trying the above card.   Thank you for your time and help.  LW
