The lock icon on this forum's threads RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to figure out how to edit a thread I posted on this forum.  There is a lock icon next to it, and it's not allowing me to edit it. Can someone tell me how to remove the lock so I can edit the post?

    Thanks - Mike deaf guy

  • Mike,

Threads can only be locked by Moderators, and when locked no additional replies are allowed in the thread.  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/help#209

If you have a question about the locked thread, you need to post your question in the forum where it was locked.  The moderator who locked it wont see it here.

Also, since this is a forums question, moving it to the forums questions forum.

    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Although most of Mike Walton's (there are too many Mikes in this thread) posts seem to have been made to the SharePoint Online forum as he has BPOS 2007, some of his posts have been made to the pre-SharePoint 2010 forums where I have been using the Locking of forums to close threads down completely once the OP has received an answer that has satisfied him/her. (With some threads being locked months after a post had been marked as an answer by a Moderator and the OP hadn't come back to the thread in those several months/years).

The intention is to stop threads becoming far too long and unwieldy through the addition of new questions (sometimes for off-topic newer products) when the actual question posed by the OP and specified in the Title of the thread has long been answered.

This effort has been going on now for going on for nine months and in that time only two people have asked me to open a thread so that they (the OP) can add further information to their answer.

Through this effort, finding answers in that set of forums has become easier (as threads are tighter) and bi-products are both that the statistics of forum use are better and it's easier (through the titles of threads) for Microsoft to see what concerns people the most (something that was not so easy when they were several questions in some threads, some of which had little to do with the title).

Mike Kinsman is naturally correct in this "Threads can only be locked by Moderators, and when locked no additional replies are allowed in the thread."

I hope the above has explained my reasoning for locking them.
