Copy of Windows is not Genuine After 6 Months of Use RRS feed

  • Question

  • This is a Dell PC which came with Vista and I updated to Win7 Home Premium.  It has run fine for over 6 months, was activated after the updated OS and now I get the Win7 build 7601 black desktop message.  This was a retail version of the full Win7 not the upgrade.  Here is the diagnostic info:

  • I have tried a number of times to go online and validate and did try the 800# phone option with the key that came with it.  I forget the wording but the keys sounded like they were blacklisted.

  • The Key here is showing as being blocked.

There are a number of reasons for such blocks - the most common being:

    • The Key has been reported to MS as being stolen/lost
    • The Key has been reported to MS as being returned for refund
    • The Key has been 'abused' - too many activations/ too many places/ too many computers

You may be able to find the actual reason by using telephone activation and speaking to an operator.

From where did you purchase this License? In what form was it delivered?

  • It was an eBay purchase.  The disc is the real deal, but maybe the product key is not.  I will give them a call and see.  Thanks.

  • This sounds to me as if it's likely to be an MSDN-type Key. If that is the case, then the following applies...

Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.

You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

Please read the following posts.... .................................

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

    see also this post....

Also - have a look at this video....

You may be able to get a complimentary copy of the OS from Microsoft - fill in the Counterfeit report here...

  • I'm pretty sure I got hosed on this one.  The CD looks good, but after reading your links and the You Tube the hologram is not part of the CD, but a damn good label!  I filed the claim with MS to see what they can do.  I would just like to get Windows 10 and be done with it, but since it is now not activated it won't download and install all the way.

  • How to purchase Windows 10.

  • I think Windows 10 needs to be free or it might just be a Chromebook purchase since this PC is past it's prime.

  • Windows 10 is indeed free for those running a genuine edition of Windows 7 (up until July 29th).

  • Well my other Windows 7 Pro PC came back with the same message today.  This one has been running on this OS install for over two years and it just now locks me out.  I called MS on both of these PC's and they were no help and said I had to talk with the OS reseller to get a refund or correction.  No way they will ever help at this point and look to be gone from Ebay now.  Is there any way to get an updated activation key to make this function before Windows 10  is gone from the free download?  If not I might be down with MS at home and stick to Chrome.  Please PM if  you have a better option.  Thanks.

  • The only options are to either go through the WGA replacement route (if you qualify) or to purchase a new copy of Windows from a reputable dealer.
