Do u hate marking posts as answers??? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Do you hate marking posts as "answers" since it takes a long time and repeated work due to a bug... You would have noticed that if you mark one post as answer and then mark the immediate one as answer, the upper one will be unmarked automatically, then when you mark the upper one again , the lower one will get unmarked and finally only when  the lower post is marked will the two get marked as answers... Though this doesn't happen all the times, it happens frequently...

I have found a ingenious way to overcome this problem and to mark the posts as answers very fast without any repeated work...

Whenever you have many posts to be marked as answers,(say u have to mark 2 posts as answers ,  Mark the second post as answer firstly and then the first one... )

Similarly divide the whole list into groups of two and mark them answers as per above style..

  • Even i didn't noticed any such problem.... But marking stuff is really tiresome as it takes a lot of time.. I dont know why cant they make it faster.. I m sure you all are using orkut, their in your friend list, you can mark different attributes, and its real time, the page doesnot reloads every time and it works very quick,... I just hope there could be something like that here also....

  • Since the forum pages are in aspx, maybe they should ajaxify it. If we use ajax then there would not be any need to postbakc for each and everything.

I think orkut is in php right? correct me if i am wrong.

  • @Adnan - I have experienced this problem many times... and that was the main reason i tried other patterns of marking so that i can avoid the need to mark a post as answer twice ...

  • @Adnan - Even i have faced this bug. But sometimes this workaround works, after marking a post as answer - if you see the above post get marked as UN-answered, then i just do a page refresh, and it works SOMETIMES. I dont know why this is happening.

But if you want to avoid this bug, you can have gaps between marking posts as answers. I do that most of the time and the bug have reduced, if not eliminated. But i know sometimes it even happens at the first attempt Stick out tongue we cant do anything to it , rather than just try to avoid it. I also mark all the responses in my thread as answered, except in a few threads, like API Programming, cause there are toooo many posts in it, it takes too much time and also consumses lot of bw ( I dont have unlimited bandwidth) Stick out tongue

  • As the competition has ended, I have stopped marking the posts now.. i have not marked a single post after 15th... but after my exams, i will try to mark genuinely, i.e. not all the posts but the ones that deserves to be marked...

  • hmm same here.. marking posts as answers is one time taking job.. a little bit of ajax will help to improve the forums experience in a great way..

also i suggest we have a user rating system so that the other members can rate a user for his work in the forums.. this would make forums all the more fun...

  • Even I have decided to mark only those posts as answers which are genuine. During the contest, I used to mark everyones post as answer, but i think now we have to change a bit.

Also I agree with Ajax'ifying the forums, that will be really good.

  • Also we should only mark those posts that really gave the answer to our solution. And not any partial answer. Also posts like i am posting right now dont deserve to be marked as answer. I hope everyone thinks the same as well.

Now When should we mark a post as answer ? The answer according to me should be that only the post that really gives the answer to your question should be marked as answer. And that post should be such a post, that noone else would even need to reply to that thread. So it would have to be like this - If you have marked the post as answer, noone else should post in that thread, except if he wants to correct the person or add something more onto it.  By doing that practice we can know which authors of the threads have got their answers, and which are still searching for the answers. So we can only look for those threads that requires answer.

And also those thread in where post is marked as answer, we can use it for our reference also, or others who my have the same question can also refer to it.

  • I shall keep that in mind too, from now onwards. However, the number of posts and posts as answers have dropped drastically, don't you think?

  • Yes m8.. The number of posts have reduced from steady flow to almost a trickle..  This may be attributed to the reason that many have their exams going now..
