Display of threading information RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I was a major agitator for the ability to see the threading information in the forums, but when we got the threading view option in V3 it was almost useless, because you had to drill down into the thread to find what you were looking for.

In V4  the optional Threaded View setting in My Settings  is much more useful, because now the whole thread is displayed (no more drilling). However, the problem is that it is not possible to identify the new posts (since last viewing), because they are scattered through the display. In the flat list view, all the new posts are at the end, so they are easily found (but you cannot see the threading context).

The threaded view could be somewhat improved by displaying the new posts in a different way (different border perhaps), but there is another way to display threading information that would work for the flat List View. I suggested this before in V3, but it did not seem to gain much (any) traction.

The idea is to display on each response post, not only the author and post time, but also the author and post time of the post being responded to . This could be displayed either next to, or immediately below the author/post time for the post itself.

The point is that it is not the full threading information that people want, but rather just the information about which post is being responded to. A good poster will make this apparent by quoting (or otherwise), but many folks do not do this, and you have to hunt through the thread to find what they are talking about.

I think that if we had this feature, I would not use the threaded view, though there is no reason to remove it if there are people who like it.

    Does anybody like this idea?
