Security Essentials Broken Again? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Ok, my XP laptop did it's usual update of Security Essentials this morning, and promptly announced that my copy of Windows isnn't genuine. Well, surprise surprise the main Genuine Advantage validation page says the exact opposite.

Come on Microsoft, can you get your act together and stop putting out updates to MSE which has broken validation chekcs in it (as this morning had - AGAIN, how many times is this so far?) or strip out the validation from MSE all together.....

If MSE is still saying it’s non-genuine, please post an MGADiag report

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

  • I'll run it again - but MGADiag doesn't report a problem, it thinks everything is fine. It is only MSE which has the problem....

Seems to be exactly the same as the last time this happened, when about 2 or 3 MSE updates later it stopped complaining.

  • This sort of thing often happens if there's the remains of a previous AV still on the machine - what AV's were previously installed? Did you run the manufacturer's removal tool, AFTER running the normal uninstaller?

Best advice is usually to uninstall and reinstall MSE - after running the removal tools for any other AV's

  • Hi Noel,

I'll give it a go but I'm not hopeful. This laptop has been running MSE for the past 3+ years and not had any other AV installed for a lot longer than that. When it did have another AV installed I think I did a rebuild of the machine from scratch before installing MSE, as the previous one (PC Tools) just wouldn't remove itself fully.

As I mentioned, the last time this happened I uninstalled MSE 3/4 times all to no effect, tried all the recommened file/directory access rights fixes - same result. The problem "went away" 3 or 4 MSE updates later.

Thanks for your help so far...
