    I have been using the online photo backup since just after Christmas, since that time it's uploaded 837 photos, only 8577 to go. In total 700mb. Why is it taking so long to get this data uploaded? I have left the pc on for the most part during this time. I have a 1500/256 adsl internet connection and am in Australia. Is everyones this slow?

  • Onecare Online Photo Backup is complete!

     

    I've identified the problem a my Netgear DG834G V2 router. To confirm this I performed the following tests, all of the different scenarios were performed over at least a day or night period.

     

    1. Duplicated arrangements as close as possible to my at work internet connection, this included works router DG834G V1 and the work logon credentials for the router. The ISP I use at work and home is the same so I could transfer these settings and still connect correctly. Basically this test used everything the same except the network cables and telephone line used for ADSL to my home. Result, everything worked properly, cables OK.

     

    2. Put work logon credentials into my router, Netgear DG834G V2. A handfull of photos were backed up.

     

    3. Put my logon credtials into work router. Everything worked properly.

     

    At this stage I was pretty much sure that it was the Netgear DG834G V2, however to confirm this was the case I performed a factory reset of the router, checked it had the latest firmware and performed the following test.

     

    4. Put my logon credentials into newly reset router, a very small amount of photos backed up.

     

    5. Put work logon credential into newly reset router, again small amount of photos backed up.

     

    6. Put the work router DG834F V1 back into place with my logon details, backup is finished.

     

    I only have one further question in my mind about this, how would a Netgear DG834 V3 (not a wireless model though, as work doesn't have any to try out) handle the online photo backup. Will put some photos onto the PC (last 3 months or so's worth) and see how they upload. Will do this either today or tomorrow and post results.

  • Total of 700mb uploaded so far or to go?

    It should have uploaded more quickly that that, I think. In my experience with this during the beta, it uploaded all of my photos within a day or so and that was close the 5 gigs.

    I recommend contacting support - especially since you are paying extra for this service.

    Thankyou for your continued assistance. I've followed your instructions and made an alteration to my configuration as you've described in step 5. I will continue to monitor the results overnight this evening. Interestingly there seems to have been some improvement in upload in the last few days prior to making these changes. Prior to this communication I'd managed to upload approx 700mb in close to a 1 month period. In the last few days this has significantly increased to 2.4Gb, I consider this upload speed significantly more acceptable.
     
    As mentioned earlier I will continue to monitor the uploads that occur overnight.

    1) Open OneCare.

    2) Click on change settings.

    3) Click on the firewall tab and click configure firewall. If the firewall is set to “Public”, please click on change location to change it to “Home/Work”.

    4) Close configure firewall, on Windows Live OneCare Settings, click on advance settings.

    5) In advance settings, tick the “File and Printer Sharing-for subnet and Internet”, click apply and ok.

    Please update me with the with the results of the configuration whether it improved the speed of uploading your picture to the Online Photo Backup by replying to this email.

  • The support tech sent an email that was seeking confirmation that this had resolved the problem. I advised that I would continue to monitor. Have since sent an additional email advising that it was still the same.

    I've found the button in onecare that creates a support log, within the report it creates is detailed information on the backup progress. I've stripped out information relating to my centralised backup. I cannot see any way of attaching files to this forum so have pasted data below (apologies this is long). If I could work out how to do it easily it would be great to chart this in excel, might give me a clue on why it is so sparodic.

     

    In the interest of moving forward tonight will have the MEDIAPC exited out of media center, will also turn off the VOIP adapter which is also on the LAN (you never know.)

     

    I really hope someone with some "knowin" can offer some guidance, particularly on the status codes.

  • Yes, that's long. , but it appears to very informative. I find it interesting that it continues to end with the same result code and list a significant number of failed files for the backup process.

    Keep your fingers crossed that this information will be enough to get some advice from the OneCare team on why this problem has been ongoing for you.

    In the subject - "OneCare Photo Backup Problem"

    His initial determination based on the partial entry is that there is a bandwidth problem, ie, something is restricting the ability for Photo Backup to transfer the data. By reviewing the complete logs, they may be able to pinpoint what may be causing this restriction - perhaps a conflict with another program on your system.

    Thanks for recruiting the program manager to review the slowness I'm experiencing.

     

    I've followed the instructions on creating the supportdata.zip file, this presents me with another problem. Running the OneCareSupport application (as administrator) starts the collection process, after less than a minute I receive a dialog as follows

    Title: Windows Live OneCare

    Alert: Cannot collect support information

    Details: Windows Live OneCare could not collect support information. Close any open command windows and free some diskspace, and then try again. If the problem persists, contact Help center.

     

    Too my knowledge I have no open "command windows", as far as free disk space goes there is 76GB free. Have rebooted the pc a couple of times and have even tried in safe mode. All times I get the same dialog.

     

    Should I take this problem to the help center as advised in the dialog box? Please say no and have a miracle solution instead, please.

     

    On a side note, my last communication with the help center has not been responded too, do you think I should be pushing them to review my support call?

  • I'm pretty sure this will be the last post as I believe I have some seemingly conclusive evidence that the problems I am experiencing are in no way related to the Onecare software.

     

    Have taken my mediapc from home to work, the idea being to test an internet connection other than the one going to my home. When I plugged the computer in there were 4075 photos backed up with 5340 remaining, had been like this for a few days. After a day this has changed to 4762 backed up with 4635 remaining, in a day I've backed up 578 photos.

     

    In terms of the different internet connections they are both 1500/256, with actual speed tests at both ends providing much the same download and upload speeds. So my next lot of research will be into what's wrong at home.

     

    An observation I'd like to make though is on the logging side of onecare. If files are not able to be backed up there must be a reason, is it possible the logs indicate why Onecare backed up 0 files? I'm aware that there are exit codes in the log but the reality is they mean very little to the casual observer, if for instance the error related to poor response times thus creating an exit, couldn't it say something like that? or at least a suggestion on what might be wrong.

     

    Thank you to Stephen for your responses, it is greatly appreciated that you were able to respond to my cries for help on an ongoing basis.

  • Thanks for the update and you're welcome. Yes, I suspect that your logs may indicate what the problem was/is at home. I'm not sure that I'd say it is resolved until it is fixed at home, though. :-)

    You *are* paying extra for this service!

    Different ISPs at home and work? Router at home? Some sort of QOS setting on the home router? A hardware firewall?

  • Onecare Online Photo Backup is complete!

     

    I've identified the problem a my Netgear DG834G V2 router. To confirm this I performed the following tests, all of the different scenarios were performed over at least a day or night period.

     

    1. Duplicated arrangements as close as possible to my at work internet connection, this included works router DG834G V1 and the work logon credentials for the router. The ISP I use at work and home is the same so I could transfer these settings and still connect correctly. Basically this test used everything the same except the network cables and telephone line used for ADSL to my home. Result, everything worked properly, cables OK.

     

    2. Put work logon credentials into my router, Netgear DG834G V2. A handfull of photos were backed up.

     

    3. Put my logon credtials into work router. Everything worked properly.

     

    At this stage I was pretty much sure that it was the Netgear DG834G V2, however to confirm this was the case I performed a factory reset of the router, checked it had the latest firmware and performed the following test.

     

    4. Put my logon credentials into newly reset router, a very small amount of photos backed up.

     

    5. Put work logon credential into newly reset router, again small amount of photos backed up.

     

    6. Put the work router DG834F V1 back into place with my logon details, backup is finished.

     

    I only have one further question in my mind about this, how would a Netgear DG834 V3 (not a wireless model though, as work doesn't have any to try out) handle the online photo backup. Will put some photos onto the PC (last 3 months or so's worth) and see how they upload. Will do this either today or tomorrow and post results.
