How do I get my first programming job? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I graduated from DeVry in June. Career services tells me to be sending out 20 resumes a week! Folks, I am an entry level candidate, I actually qualify for about 1 job a week and remotely qualify for about 3. I know for sure that I want to be a programmer but to me it seems impossible to get my first job. Help! What do I do and what should I know?

    What I know:

OOP, Data structures and algorithms, basic Java,  C# (I am almost done with a chat application that uses multiple threads, remoting,  p2p, and is configured to work on the internet and work with a sql server database), ASP.NET (nothing too advanced), html, flash...

Now I am not the brightest bulb in the drawer but it seems like there should be SOMETHING out there for me. Does anyone have any advice? I live in Cincinnati but am considering moving to Columbus.

  • Since you dont have experience, I would suggest you to get certification which will give you an edge. Here is a list of .Net related certifications http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-vstudio.aspx#tab2. Nowadays, most employers search resumes with certification related Keywords.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck finding a dreamjob.
