WMC Permissions issues after PP2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I previously made registry changes to allow my Vista MC machines to see my shared folders on my home server.  After PP2 was installed, the permissions are now stuck in a certain way, and I cannot change them.  When I click on the Media Center add-in, make a permissions change, then click apply, the console crashes and disappears.  Any changes are not saved.

I previously had a recorded TV folder, and the permissions are set OK for that, as well as Music and Videos.  However, I can no longer see my DVD collection or other some other shared folders.

  • Well, it took me over a week to figure it out.  It had something to do with the fact that I already had a "recorded TV" share on the WHS before PP2.  What I eventually figured out is that I needed to uninstall PP2, remove the files and my custom DVD and recorded TV shares, and re-install PP2.  After PP2, I re-created my DVD share and copied the files back to recorded TV.  The permissions now take without crashing the console.

My suggestion would be to uninstall PP2, reboot the server, undo your registry changes, reboot again, then install PP2 again.

  • There doesn't seem to be a discrete uninstall for PP2.  Does anyone know how to uninstall it?

  • You will need to log in to your server using Remote Desktop or physical console, then uninstall Power Pack 2 through add/remove programs.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Sorry, should have stated that I did not find it there.  Should I see it in there?  I don't have an entry for that in my add/remove programs.

System properties shows Windows Home Server Service Pack 2.

Console shows Windows Home Server with Power Pack 2.

Are there any logs that I could look at?  How about a command line uninstall?

  • Ok, I got my head out of my rear and found a problem.

In the application event log I found the following error:

    .NET Runtime 2.0 Error Reporting
    Event ID: 5000

    EventType clr20R3, P1 homeserverconsole.exe, P2 6.0.0.0, P3 49b739c9, P4 homeservercontrols, P5 6.0.0.0, P6 49b739c7, P7 5d3, P8 49, P9 system.nullreferenceexception, P10 NIL

Clicked the link in the error message and it came up with nothing.

You need to check the Show updates box in order to see Power Pack 2 in the list.

  • I try to uninstall PP2 through RDP but it just tells me the update cannot be removed
Is there some other setting I need to enable to get rid of it and reinstall?

No, it should just work.  Did you run any type of "cleanup" program on your server (something that removes NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$ folders)?

  • no I haven't run any such program on the server.
I will have a look for the Ntuninstall file though.
    Thanks

  • OK Kariya21, I managed to unistall PP2 through the NtUnistall route you suggested.
Will try update now to reinstall so keeping fingers crossed.
