get warning messages tho have genuine software RRS feed

  • Question

  • Having installed office 2007, I keep getting warning messages that the software is not genuine. When I go to the validation page however, I am congratulated on in fact having genuine software. The message now "threatens" to declare my office 2007 a pirate copy in 10 days - how can I stop this?
    Thanks

  • Hello The Realtor,

Please refer to the snippet of your mgadiag report below:

The report is telling us that you have a nongenuine installation of a Volume Licensing-only edition of Office 2007 Pro Plus.

Volume Licensing editions of Office such as Pro Plus are not to be sold to individual consumers, and are only to be sold to larger businesses, educational institutions, and governmental agencies who need flexibility in installing and deploying many copies of Office.

These Volume Licenses should not be sold to consumers because they are not permanent licenses; they are subject to a current Volume Licensing Agreement that has a finite term, sort of like a lease.  Consumers thinking they purchased permanently licensd software would understandably be upset when their software stopped working at the end of a lease.

If you purchased Office 2007 Pro Plus thinking you were buying genuine retail Office Professional for consumers with a permanent license, please return the software to the place of purchase for replacement or a full refund.

  • Hello Darin,

I am having a similar issue to thos_k. I have pasted the report from the Genuine Diagnostics tool as you advised thos_k. This has only happened as I am typing so I have yet to receive any threats at this stage.

Hoping you can assist me on this.

    Thanking you in advance.

    Warmest regards,

  • Hello Dan,

Thank you for your prompt and accurate reply. I am sorry I could not thank you earlier as I have had a tumultuous week after receiving your reply. I wish it was as easy as you had suggested to return the product and receive a replacement or refund.

Unfortunately I have either counterfeit or stolen software as was advised by Microsoft Support Sydney, Australia. I purchased the software on Ebay described as genuine, sealed and brand new. What I received was exactly as described. To avoid any problems I promptly took the software to my computer technician who knows me and was aware how I purchased the product. I asked them to do all tests possible to determine its validity and then install it on my computer. They promptly did this and advised me "everything seems to be fine". I wanted this done immediately as I knew by paying with paypal and if I made a claim within 45 days I could have had my money refunded and the culprit penalized if there was a problem. Well that was 8 months ago. Everything has been functioning perfect up until I updated service pack 2 on 9th August 2009. Then the alarm bells rang. With your knowledge, skill and want of helping people, I was quickly able to determine my next steps.

At this stage Microsoft Support, Ebay Live Chat, the South Australian Police - eCrime Division and the Australian Federal Police have been notified and all systems are go. I still have have to contact Microsoft Anti-Piracy team, Ebay Trust and Safety team and econsumer.gov (an international consumer protection agency) as advised by Ebay Live Chat.

On returning to my computer technician they advised me they were not Microsoft Certified and could not have verified whether the product was counterfeit. I believe something as simple as the mgadiagnostic test would not have been above their ability. But they were happy to take my A$240.00 to install and check the product. I have since emailed them the link you provided for the mgadiagnostic report to help them in their daily duties.

I ask what did they check? It became a circular discussion as I am not a computer technician. Since then whilst playing around and checking to see what programs and updates I have installed I noticed it clearly states "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007" on opening the control panel program and features window. I didn't conduct any tests or reports - there it was as clear as day. The saga no doubt will continue and I am still out of pocket.

Once again Dan, thank you and keep up your good and valuable work. And everyone else "caveat emptor", buyer beware!

    Warmest regards,

    A

  • Hello The Realtor,

Thank you for getting back to us with an update of your situation.  It's a shame that this sort of thing happens.

Please check the Office Genuine Advantage FAQ to see if you qualify for either the Office Genuine Offer or the Office Complimentary Offer:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC

While the PayPal and eBay claim period of 45 days has expired, if you paid PayPal with your credit card it may be worth the effort to contact the credit card company to see if they can offer some relief.

    Good Luck! :-)

  • Hello GentleServant,

Right now, your IBM computer has a Volume Licensing edition of XP Pro installed (Line 10), and that installation was done with a now geographically blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) (Line 2).  VLKs are geographically blocked (blocked when used outside of the geographic region agreed to by Microsoft and the original keyholder) by Microsoft in cooperation with the original keyholder for such reasons as the key was lost, stolen, compromised, misused, or expired.  Also, MS may have blocked the key if it notices a pattern of misuse, ie, more installations of XP using that key than authorized.

The particular Product Key you are using, which ends in 3R89F-D2KXW-VPK3J, is a widely pirated key, and it looks like it recently had a geographically block put on it to try to curb its use, which probably explains why it was showing as Genuine up until recently.

As a rule, VL editions of XP should not be sold to individual consumers.  Businesses, schools and gov'ts normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers.  Additionally, VL editions are Upgrade licenses ONLY, and therfore cannot be used as the primary or base license for a computer.

Quite often this situation is the result of untrained computer repair personnel at shops using downloaded copies of XP Pro to repair computers that never came with XP Pro.  If you have ever taken your computer to a repair shop, or if a well-meaning friend ever helped you fix the computer, then this is the likely source of the problem.

This is why you were seeing the "software counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of XP is an unauthorized installation.

Your IBM computer did NOT come brand new from IBM with this installation of XP Pro using the Volume Licensing Key.  If you look on the computer you will see a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) that tells you what version and edition of Windows came with the computer.  If the CoA says that XP Pro came with the computer, then you may be able to use the Product Key Updater Utility http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=45668 to "genuine-ize" the XP Pro installation now on the computer.  If your IBM computer came with XP Home or Media Center Edition, the Key Updater will not work.

So if the CoA is NOT for XP Pro, or if the Product Key Updater cannot fix the problem, then the best course of action right now is to acquire a set of Recovery CDs from IBM, then backup and offload your data for safekeeping, then use the Recovery CDs to cleanly install the right XP onto your computer.

Regarding the installation of Office now on your computer, please refer to the snippet of the mgadiag utility report below:

    OGA Data-->
    Office Status: 100 Genuine
Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 - 100 Genuine
    OGA Version: N/A, 0x80070002
    Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002
    Office Diagnostics: 025D1FF3-230-1

At first glance this would seem to be a Genuine installation of Office 2003 Professional.

However, if we look further into the report, we can see that the above installation is a Volume Licensing edition of Office 2003 by checking the reported PID value and type:  Pid>73931-640-4339835-57976</Pid><PidType>14</PidType>

The number "640" and the PidType of "14" when reported for Office 2003 (or Windows XP) show that these are Volume Licenses.  Volume Licenses are for all practical purposes software "leases" from Microsoft to larger companies that need to install many copies of software with maximum flexibility.  These licenses are not supposed to be sold to individual consumers (and you wrote that you bought yours on eBay) because as with all leases, the license is subject to a lease period that can expire, and it can be cancelled at any time for any reason.  Consumers, on the other hand, should only be sold retail or OEM  licenses for Microsoft software because these are perpetual or permanent licenses that don't expire or get cancelled lik a Volume License.

So, while your Office 2003 Pro installation is showing as "Genuine" at the moment, that could change tomorrow if the company that is the real Volume License holder cancels their license contract with Microsoft, or if by mutual agreement, Microsoft and that company decide that because of excessive piracy of the Product Key, they have to block the Product Key and issue a new one to that company.  If that happened, you as the consumer would be left with nongenuine software that you paid for.

You should contact your seller and demand that they accept a return of the software and refund your purchase price as they did not sell you Genuine software.  You should have been sold a retail license when you made your Office 2003 Pro purchase.

  • Thanks Dan- I am pursueing this with both sources. The ebay seller ebx.007 is getting this message and I will rake him on Ebay if I don't get reimbursed. Great job Buddy. Pirates Suck. "I have just received notice from Microsoft, which I double checked on a users forum, that the software you sold me is a volume license, ie illegal for individual use software. I can no longer use it and demand a complete refund for it. I await satisfaction and can prove to you it is volume licensed, which you probably know. If I am not satisfied, I guarantee I will pursue this vigorously with Ebay. Thank You."

  • Thanks Dan. I have the same issue with a volume licensed copy of Office 2003 sold to me on the Ebay, factory sealed and all, looking all right except the holographic image being a sticker instead of being embedded. The PID number is the same as above (that's how I found the link). Now here is my problem: I need Office 2003 and I will not use Office 2007. When I wrote to Microsoft Support on how to get a genuine Office 2003, I got no answer (I mean, I got a reply but it did not answer my question). Ebay sells Office 2003 but it seems like most or all of these copies on Ebay come from the same source. Any ideas on what I could do if I want a genuine version of Office 2003 and not, not, not 2007?

  • Hello Toliy,

Sorry I can't be of greater assistance regarding your search for Office 2003, but I do not know of any reliable retailer offering Office 2003 for sale.  I think it's just too old for major retailers to want to bother with anymore.

I'm sure there is one honest person selling Office 2003 on eBay (a retail license for Office can be legally sold to someone else by the original owner), but finding that one person in a swamp of scammers is an almost impossible task.
