Large WHS Storage Pool Backup Question RRS feed

  • Question

  • At present I have 2x 1.5TB drives in my Dell PowerEdge SC1425 WHS box. I'm looking to buy an eSATA enclosure to give me some additional disk capacity. A 4 bay eSATA box will mean I can add an extra 8TB to the WHS if I buy 2TB drives.

To the people out there with these massive 10TB+ WHS systems:
How to you perform off-site or out-of-box backups so that you have copies of the data outside of the home server incase something there fails or do you bite the bullet and accept you have no backup?

Is there a way to edit the registry so that the folder duplication process will duplicate the data over three disks instead of the default two?

    Thanks
    Richard

  • It's not possible to change the number disks used for duplication. It's not really desirable either, since using three disks will just reduce your server's capacity without improving data safety significantly, since you'll still be vulnerable to force majeure events.

To better protect your data, you can use the Windows Home Server server backup feature to copy one or more shares to an external drive, and store that off-site.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

And that's the crux of my question.

If you have some super-server with 5TB, 10TB or more of available storage and your ripping DVD's and BD-DVD's and storing all your family music and photo's on the server, how do people backup these shares to a removable or remote device?

To my knowledge, 10TB USB2.0 disks don't exist and I can't exactly justify buying two eSATA enclosures - One for the live data and one for the backup.

  • For external backups, break up shared folders into 2 TB chucks, use the "server backup" feature to put them on 2 TB disks.
