  • Question

  • Completed a system recovery via recovery console where I copied over registry files into window\system32\config.
System restarts with msg "This copy of Windows is not activated" When I choose option to activate - nothing happens.

  • Hello Billtor,

Sounds like you may have tried this:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

It would seem that this warning applies in your case:  "WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk."

At this point your best option is to use the Recovery Console or an offline operating system (such as BartPE or Ultimate Boot CD) to rescue the data from your computer, and then do a clean installation of Windows XP.  Alternately, you can do a parallel installation (method 4 in this MS KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316941 ) to rescue your data, then follow up with a clean installation.
