troubles synchronizing

Question

Hi all,
I had live Mesh working fine until yesterday (Sunday), when I last sync my home computer after modifying a few files. This morning (Monday) I arrived in the office, switched on Live Mesh but no sync would happen. Went to the Live Desktop page and all the files I last sync yesterday are there (I also opened one and it's all good). Yet, it says that my work machine is up to date, which is not. In the notifier, the last News are dated 19/10 which is very strange, since I last sync my work machine on Friday 29/10, and Saturday my home PC sync correctly when I switched it on. The Notifier shows that my work machine is online.
I tried with the help
Troubleshoot synchronization
Remove and then re-synchronize the folder
- Open the notifier, click the Folders icon
, then click Manage folders.
- Right-click the folder that isn't synchronizing, then click Delete.
- In the Delete Folder dialog box, click Delete. The folder will now appear under Not synchronized with this computer.
- Right-click the folder again, then click Sync with this computer.
- In the Synchronize Folder dialog box, choose a location for the folder on your computer (the default location is your Documents folder), then click OK. The contents of the folder should now synchronize with your computer.
This procedure worked fine for a small folder with only a few small files. I then repeated it for my main folder, which is about 1GB and voila', IT DOES NOT UPDATE! so my main folder is now EMPTY in the work machine (I am refreshing every now and then but it is still empty. The content is still on Live Desktop, and on my home computer since that is off).
I am very confused. It seems like Live Mesh is not working properly (it did not sync anything this morning), yet the fact that the above procedure worked for a small folder suggests is not dead. Internet at work seems to be working fine. I use Windows XP, SP3. Any idea of what might be going wrong???

maybe someone at Microsoft did something after reading the post, but the folder is now finally synchronizing.
still do not know why this morning the standard sync procedure did not work.

I would probably not pursue this and switch over to DropBox for your needs since Live Mesh beta will be gone in 4 months.
Based on the behavior, I imagine that the bottleneck could be on your machine, where a reinstall might fix it, the network connection timing out often enough that it can't maintain a connection long enough to initiate and complete the transfer, or some odd server/account issue. I think that the latter is least likely. Perusing the logs might provide a clue, but I don't know that it is worth doing so.

It could have been a back end issue that was resolved on its own or some action was taken with a troublesome server or service.

Hi Steve,
today I am having the same sync problem again. So this is what is going on:
- Friday I sync my Work PC with Live Desktop
- Saturday I switched on Live Mesh on my Home PC. It synchronized all files correctly.
- During the weekend I worked on my Home PC and yesterday I synchronized with Live Desktop.
- Today went back to Work PC but files are not up to date. Yet
- Live Desktop files are up to date.
- On Live Mesh Devices (online) it says that my Work PC is up to date as of now. Obviously, I can see that this is not the case.
- My notification icon on the Work PC has stopped updating the news on 19 October. On Live Desktop the News are updated correctly.
- My notification icon confirms that my Work PC is online.
It looks like my work PC is uploading correctly but it is not downloading from the Mesh. Sync setting are the same on Live Desktop, Home and Work PC. Last time I had this problem I had to remove some folders on my Work PC and then add them again. This worked eventually but it took a very long time. So it is not something I want to do again. I am not sure I have updated my Work PC from the Mesh since then, so it could be that this is a permanent problem. I work with XP. My work PC is within a University. I also use Dropbox and do not seem to have this problem with it.
Would uninstalling and re-installing Live Mesh help? I do not think so. It mainly seems a problem with downloading and sync from the Mesh. But why does it say that my Work PC is sync?

Hi again Steve,
well it now has started to synchronize. So the problem is that synchronization is incredibly slow. I do not have any other memory or CPU demanding application open. I guess the point is to find out whether this is a Live Mesh problem or my Work PC/Network problem. Any idea how I could find out?

Steve,
thanks for your answer. I have been told that our Work PCs will get a Windows 7 install next year, so Live Mesh is still of interest to me. Besides I find Live Mesh superior to Dropbox.
I'll try a reinstall and hope this fixes the problem. Thanks for your replies.

You're welcome. I hope that Windows Live Mesh works out for you on the upgraded Windows 7 machine(s) at work, then. I am not familiar with DropBox, though what I've read is that it uses a special folder location to sync data, which isn't a limitation of Windows Live Mesh (or the Live Mesh beta), so I can see where you'd find Mesh to work out better for your needs.
