upgrading a non genuine xp from a genuine Vista upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought a used computer with windows xp pro installed which unfortunately was not genuine.
I can get an upgrade to Vista with COA at a decent price from ebay. Can I run this upgrade on
    the unvalidated xp pro successfully?

  • No, the Windows XP license must be genuine.  You would need a "full version" of Windows Vista and then perform a "clean install".

  • Hi edean1,

Please be careful when buying Windows off Ebay. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is and I would hate for you to have to come back to these forums because some crook sold you some bad software.

I highly recommend buying from a retailer that you trust (perferably, in my opition, one that's been in busness a long time). It may cost a little more then the one on Ebay, but it's allot safer.  (do a quick search of this forum for the word "ebay" and you will get a hint at how may people have been burned by ebay sellers).

    Thank you,
    Darin MS
