  • Question

  • I purchased my laptop one year ago, at which time the FireDog employee of Circuit City came to the house to install the router for wireless connection.  Included in the purchase was a one year subscription to Windows Live OneCare.  The subscription warned me about the impending expiration, at which time I attempted to renew, but was unable due to not knowing the needed password.  On 11/2/2008, I subscribed to one year of Windows Live OneCare under a different account/user ID/password of my own (IDs that are saved and documented to avoid not knowing password).  My problem:
    • As expected, the initial OneCare expired 11/8/08
    • This original account keeps prompting me to renew (no password thus unable to)
    Two questions:
    1. How do I get my computer to recognize my new Windows Live OneCare account?
    2. How do I get the old account out of my computer, without disabling the new account?
    Please, and thank you!  CJB61

  • Your new account should be shown as active at http://billing.microsoft.com

Once you've confirmed that, uninstall OneCare from your PC and reinstall from http://onecare.live.com

Then subscribe/activate and sign in with the LiveID for your new subscription.

  • Do I have to install a new Live OneCare if it is more than a year old? I can not open my current subscription from the icon.

  • What do you mean that you can't open it from the icon? You mean OneCare is expired and won't open? Or some other problem?

If it has been expired for a while and can't be opened, then removing it and reinstalling and starting a new subscription may well be the best solution for you.

How to Uninstall Windows Live OneCare

Install from http://onecare.live.com and activate your new subscription by signing in with a LiveID and then providing payment information or selecting the option to activate with a PIN/retail key if you purchased a new copy.
