What rollups and hotfixes do i need? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I am using Dynamics CRM 4.0 On-Premise.  When i go t o elp-->About MS Dynamics CRM i get the following version 4.0.7333.2149

How can i tell what rollups/hotfixes have been applied and what ones i need to apply?

Is it good practice to install each rollup as they are released?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Geordie,

Rollups are cummulative set of updates, so you might not apply all from 1 to 12 rather just install UR 7 followed by UR 12.

    Thanks...

  • You can see what rollups are installed by going to Control Panel>Programs and features and make sure you check 'View installed updates' on your CRM Server.

This will show you which update rollups you have installed.

My suggestion is that you try and keep up to date with rollups (12 at the moment).

  • Hi,

When I look at the KB articles for rollup 7 and 8 the version number are:

    Rollup 7 - 04.00.7333.2138

    Rollup 8 - 04.00.7333.2542

As per my original post my version is:  4.0.7333.2149

Does this mean i have rollup 7 with some hotfixes applied but not quite rollup 8?

I go into Control Panel and click 'show updates' but under the Dynamics CRM Sever there is nothing listed.

I am failry new to Dynamics CRM and just trying to understand the versioning between rollup's and hotfixes.

    Thanks.

  • Interesting!, I haven't found any rollup build version numbered 4.0.7333.2149 for On-Premise, even the latest update rollup 12 has 4.0.7333.2935.

Refer this blog post showing the detailed list of roll-ups with it build numbers,

Are you using the Web Client fot dynamics CRM?

  • Hi Edwin

Yes i am using the web client for dynamic crm 4.0.

I got o Help-->About Microsoft Dynamics CRM in IE and it gives me Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 (4.0.7333.2149).

I do not know whether to install rollup 8 and see if the version changes to something that matches the list in the link you provided i.e. 04.00.7333.2542

I am currently working on a development virtual machine but have access to the UAT server.

    Thanks.

  • While it is good to have the latest rollup, for the most part rollups are bug fixes and do not add features. Therefore if you are not affected by bugs addressed by the rollups, I wouldn't worry about religiously applying them.

  • I tend to agree with Leon, however I did go to a Microsoft CRM event in the UK and the MS contact did make the point that as time goes on, the update rollups will also bring your CRM 4.0 in line with CRM 2011 and make the migration 'less painful'.

I guess there may be more going on with updates under the hood.

  • There is no doubt that is happening. We might even see the CRM Online visualisations in v4 by the end of the year, who knows :)

What that tells me is that it is a good idea to ensure all rollups are applied before upgrading to 2011.

  • Hi,

Firstly let me say thank you to everyone for all your suggestions. I have one more question.

Based on the fact i can't exactly match my build version to any of the rollup's this far I am assuming I am working with a pre-release (RTM) version of CRM 4.0.  However, the closet match seems to be somewhere between RU7 and RU8. Given that RU7 is a prerequisite for subsequent rollup's I am going to install RU7.

I hope this sounds like a sensible plan.  Alternatively, i could apply all rollups 1 - 12 to be sure my deployment is the most up to date.

    What do you  think?

  • Hi

I know i have marked an answer to this post but I am currently looking to download UR7 from here - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A4893988-7804-4E23-AB58-740441CC696E&displaylang=en#Instructions

Under the Additional Information link there is a heading 'Hotfixes and updates that you have to manually enable or configure' that points to the following KB article - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971782  Under the same heading 'Hotfixes and updates that you must enable or configure manually' it lists all the hotfixes and updates to be configured manually fro UR1 - 7.

Also, there is a note saying 'Note To maintain the functionality of the release version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0, read the steps in the following Knowledge Base articles before you install Update Rollup 7:   KB948155, KB950476, KB958962

As this is the first update i have done i have a couple of questions:

    1. Do i need to manually configure the hotfixes and updated for UR1 - 7 as specified or can I pick and choose what i add?
    2. It does not look like i need the hotfixes in the 3 KB articles it mentions and the articles also do not mention what cumulative UR the issue is fixed in.  It just says fixed in most recent cumulative update rollup
    3. Is there anyway to be alerted when a new rollup is available?

It appears I might have a lot more on my hands than just installing UR7 and then UR12 if i need to also manual configure hotfixes for UR's 1 - 6

Ah well i guess it is a lesson learned in keeping the CRM build up to date.

  • The manual hotfix's are not mandatory, they a manual for a reason. You should only apply them if you experience the problem the hotfix relates to and as you state you haven't identified any so nothing to worry about.

Alot of CRM blogs will post about new rollups so its best to keep monitoring these or subscribe to their RSS feeds, twitter posts, etc..

Also note this prerequisite from the rollup 12 info page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028381

    Prerequisites

You must have Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 installed to apply this update rollup. Update Rollup 7 is a prerequisite for Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Microsoft Office Outlook and Microsoft Dynamics CRM Data Migration Manager.
