  • An easy way to replace a drive when your server has no more physical room for drives and the storage pool is full, requires you to have a spare drive that you can use for a while, preferably one in an external enclosure, that's at least as large as the drive you want to remove.
    • Connect the spare drive.
    • Add it to the storage pool.
    • Remove the drive you're going to replace from the storage pool.
    • Replace the drive you've just removed from the pool with your new, larger drive.
    • Add the new drive to the pool.
    • Remove the external drive from the pool.
You can take a shortcut if you're willing to install the new drive in an external case temporarily. In that case, do so and then:
    • Add the new drive to the pool while in the external case.
    • Remove the old drive from the pool.
    • Shut your server down and physically replace the old drive with the new drive (removing the new drive from the external case to install it in your server).

  • how much free space do you have today? if it's possible to get just over 500 GB free, you should be able to remove one drive from the storage pool, turn off the server and replace that drive with the new drive. When the server is online, add the new drive to the pool.

i could temporary add a raid card to my whs to add my 2tb HDD

will the shared storage be affected if i re-connect my 2TBHDD from my raid card to my onboard sata connector when i removed the 500gb HDD??????

  • Ken, your approach seems very easy. Just checking, in a situation like this, if the user decide to use a SATA/ATA-usb adapter and add the new drive temporarily, would this cause any trouble when the old drive is removed and the new drive is suddenly connected internally? Will whs detect the drive automatically even if connected to another controller?
Just asking as usb-adapters are not expensive at all and also a great tool when reparing computers in many other situations.

  • Usually, Windows Home Server will detect the drive just fine, whatever interface you use for it (SATA, USB, etc.).
