Missing network access/icon or something? RRS feed

  • Question

  • As far as I can remember, there should be 3 icons for WHS under network. Wanted to enclose picture of it, but didnt figure it out how.... One icon I can use to log onto my WHS (looks like a computer) and the other ones goes for playing music (look like a disk).

Then there should be another one which I could get access to all folders on my WHS.....or am I completly wrong now?

I also have an .rar file to extract from my WHS. Under the destination path thers an option called network. When I press that, it should show me computers or such in my network, like my folders in WHS right? However nothing happens when I press.

Maybe not a very good explanation, but hope you all understood what I ment, and how to fix this.

I am assuming you are referring to using Vista?  If so, you might want to post your question in the Vista forums.  Having said that, yes, I have 3 icons on mine.  However, the one you appear to be missing is pretty much worthless anyways.  It looks like a white box standing on its end.  (The other 2 are A) a portable hard drive with an LCD monitor next to it and B) a portable hard drive with a video frame and a musical note next to it.)  All it does is take you to http://server/upnp/welcome.aspx, which is just a very basic info page for WHS in general.

Under Network, mine shows all of my computers (including my server) with a plus sign next to each of them.  I click on the plus sign on my server and it shows the shares on the server.

My best guess overall would be you need to change the properties in your Network and Sharing Center (perhaps your Network discovery is off).

  • Yeah..hehe true - should be on the Vista forum. Just been used to the WHS forum lately.

The Network discovery is on - customs it says though.

Worthless? I think I used that often - opening my WHS folders and such......

It says Custom next to Network Discovery?  I've never seen that before.

The one that you open to view the shares is the one I described as a portable hard drive with an LCD monitor next to it.  I thought that is one of the ones you have.  My suggestion would be to take a screenshot and post it on a website such as flickr, then link to it here so we can see it (otherwise we may be comparing apples and oranges :)  ).  If possible, please also post a screenshot of your Network Discovery settings.

It looks like you have 2 wireless cards.  Why is that?  Normally there is no reason for it.  The only suggestion I have at this point is to try disabling one of your wireless cards, then reboot.  If that doesn't solve it, re-enable that one, then disable the other one and reboot again.  (My thinking is that perhaps you are having issues with your dual NIC setup.)

  • One build into the computer 54mbit and one PCMCIA - rangebooster - for my DIR855 router, 300Mbits (600Mbits).

Anyway, doesnt matter which one I use, the problems is still there though....
