  • I had this same problem and found it had to do with the NET component on my computer needing to be updated.  There is information on that in the ONE help.

Unfortunately, when I did that all was working great until I rebooted as required and now my computer will go to the log on screen but I CANNOT go any further.  I have a question into ONE technical  but haven't heard back from them yet and I'm getting impatient.  So, I am searching this forum for help.

  • Do you mean that OneCare won't open or that you get a link offering to Fix It and clicking that link does nothing?

If it is the latter, Fix It doesn't work - try the database reset tool - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4bc2594b-95ab-4235-b5b8-41656b38480f&DisplayLang=en

If you mean that OneCare won't open when you click the tray icon or try to launch it from the Start Menu, your .Net Framework may be corrupt.

To repair .Net Framework 2.0 on XP:

    Open Control Panel

    Select Add or Remove Programs

    Locate Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0

Select the entry and when the installer launches, select Repair.

    Reboot when it completes.

    Alternatively, see this KB article:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306160

To remove a corrupt .Net Framework install, use this tool:

    http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip

The download of .Net Framework 2.0 can be found here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

To repair .Net Framework 2.0 and 3.0 on Vista, see this blog entry:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2007/03/26/how-to-repair-the-net-framework-2-0-and-3-0-on-windows-vista.aspx

If the above does not resolve the problem with OneCare, please contact support:

Can you boot into Safe Mode? Do you mean that you get to the Login prompt and can type your password, but Windows never actually starts?

  • When I turn on the computer the Windows XP screen comes on and works and works.

    This time I got:

    Checking a system on C:

The type of the file system is NTFS

    Of of your disks needs.....

And then "windows is starting up..." (painfully long time inbetween each of these)

Then the log in and type password comes up.

I can type in my password

But it won't do anything when I click on the green arrow or when I press enter.  Nothing more.

Then I get - a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated..........

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x897BDA0, 0x89D7BF14, 0x805D2970)

  • Anne, the stop error is crashing the PC and the disk check is happening because of the crash. The crash may be a coincidence and due to an unrelated issue completely or was brought on by a failed .Net Framework repair process.

See if you can boot into Safe mode:

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP

The try to uninstall .Net Framework and reinstall it per the above instructions. If not, please contact support:
