Error 0x8004fe21. Windows is activated, but could not validate online RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently bought a key and COA online. Maybe this is the problem, although it does not show the HROnline code 0xC004C4A2. The licensing status says "activated", but I was unsuccessful in validating it online via http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/. Windows system file check reports problems that could not be fixed, although the genuine windows activation message popped up almost immediately after the first installation of Windows (and most likely before I could have run any programs corrupting windows files). Is there any hope?

  • Installing the Intel storage driver did not solve the problem or maybe it broke again. The genuine-software pop-up reappeared last night.

I decided to reinstall Windows. The problem might have been caused by an anti-virus program (I had Avira and Avast installed at some point over the last five days) or a Cisco VPN client. But this is just guessing. The system was a clean installation about a week ago. I will report back should the problem return, in which case I will have a better idea of what I installed right before the problem occurred.

  • This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers

try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

  • Thanks for the quick response. I tried installing the Intel RST driver, but apparently my system does not meet the minimum requirements (Lenovo Thinkpad R61 8919, see above). I tried both the English and multiple language version. My Windows installation is in German. I hope this is not the problem.

  • What's more likely is that the system needs the older Matrix driver set -

    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=17882

    (IATA89ENU.exe)

  • This might have solved the problem. Thanks!

I installed the driver (version 8.9.0.1023), which was a downgrade from the installed version 8.9.2.1002, and did not get the genuine windows pop-up in the last two hours.

  • Heh :) - you could try upgrading again, as the later drivers may be better. There's nothing wrong with the drivers themselves - they are simply a little fragile, and appear to get broken alarmingly easily.

Please post a new MGADiag report so we can check the results.

I also ran sfc /scannow again after installing the Intel driver, which reported unspecified problems but failed to name any in the log file (running sfc from the installation disc, on the other hand, reported no problems).

  • The MachineData in the Office details section is generated by the machine - not by Office, and is relevant to both Office (if installed) and Windows.

if you validate at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using IE, then the errors in the WAT area should change as well.
