Windows update failed to install.... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello folks,

Everytime I try to update Windows, there are 3 components that fail to update/install. Not sure what the problem is and was hoping someone could help.

This is a PC that was given to me as a gift so I don't know the entire history as far as what came pre-installed when the PC was purchased or what extra installs were added by my friend but this is the message I'm getting when I try to update windows:

    -Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) Failed!
-Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Emailer Filter (KB962870) Failed!
-Update for Office 2003 (KB907417) Failed!

    Can someone please help me??

    A million thanks in advanced!!

  • Hello Peimope,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

As you can see, Office Pro 2003 is showing as being installed with a Blocked Volume Licensing Key.

Blocked VLK means that the product key used to install license was a genuine product key originally issued to a business, educational, or government entity.  However, the key has been blocked from further use, and that could be for many reasons: it was leaked, lost, or stolen from the entity; the entity no longer has a valid VL agreement in effect with Microsoft; or Microsoft has noticed much more use of the key that the agreement allows for.

If you are an individual consumer and purchased this copy of Office Pro 2003 from a seller, then you should not have been given this key by the seller.  If the computer's seller was a private individual, then it is possible that they did not know that the installed copy of Office Pro 2003 was a nongenuine installation.  Your options at this point include returning to the seller to demand the genuine Microsoft Office that you paid for; to return the software to the seller for a refund; or to participate in the Office Genuine Offer as described in the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx#ID0EONAC

Hopefully the information provided can help you resolve the situation with a minimum of hassle and expense.

Regarding the specific problem of updates not installing, technically that is off-topic to this forum, and is more appropriately dealt with in the Windows Update newsgroup:  http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&cat=en_us_d99bb655-a5d5-4c07-bdb0-90caf9f30c42&lang=en&cr=us

I have personally found the "Dial-A-Fix" v0.6 utility (use your favorite search engine) to be a valuable tool for fixing Windows Update problems.

  • I thought I would blog on here too as I have the same issue as you.  The recent Junk Filter will not install.  I have tried a direct download as well and have insured all "updaters" are recent and running however this update will not go.
There are no online fixes for this error that I have found.
I submitted my own trouble file to microsoft after attempting a reinstall directly from the Office Update file.

I hope that with more than one entry here Microsoft will respond to the issue.

  • Well I'm glad I'm not the only one having this problem... I used HijackThis and got the people at www.geekstogo.com to clean my PC of all possible virus/spyware/malware... so I know my PC is "CLEAN"... the people at www.geekstogo.com were the ones who suggested posting on this board for further help on how to fix my issues with not being able to install the necessary Windows updates... let's just hope the folks on this board are as efficient and helpful as the people at www.geekstogo.com although after reading your post, I'm not goin to hold my breath.  =-/

    One can only hope.
