S&T 2010: use GPS trail to calculate mileage? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there any way to use the Create GPS Trail feature to record actual mileage traveled?  In other words, if I create a GPS trail, then save it, is there any way to calculate the total number of miles traveled over that route?  I tried marking spots along the route criss-crossing an urban area, and then calculating a route, but it soon became quite complex.

  • Unfortunately, the GPS trail does not provide that sort of information.  However, the Measurement Tool (ctrl-e) does.  Therefore, you could create a GPS trail and then trace over it with the Measurement tool and that will give you the distance.  This tool operates in two ways:  straight line and free-form line.  Ctrl-e to start, move the mouse with no buttons engaged  and then click once to get the straightline distance from one point to another.  Hold down the left mouse button while you trace and then release at the end to get the free-form distance.  In either caee, press Esc to get out of Measurement function.

Obviously, the more precisely one traces, the more accurate the distance calculation.
