OEM windows "The Product ID you entered is not valid"

Question
-
Hi,
I've got hold of a shuttle xpc SN85G4v2 (AMD64 CPU and RAID on SATA HDD). The previous owner left me the HDD blank and no CD for re installing windows on it. He gave me everything else (OEM PK, all booklet, multiple CD Drivers, etc ...). I have managed to find 2 genuine OEM CDs of Windows XP Pro (an SP1 and an SP2) but due to the necessity to have an extra driver for the RAID chipset I slipstreamed those CDs instead of using the original copies (not having any FDD is not convenient but I tried and failed to get one for the past week). It went well to the point where it needs the Licence Key to be entered. Every time I've tried it says that: "The Product ID you entered is not valid"! for both install CDs, and using the original PK. I have managed to install Windows XP Pro with a MSDN licence key, being a student. But I rather prefer using the PK that came with my *new* machine.
After having fiddling for over 10 hours, plus the mendatory search over the net, I am unable to find a straight answer:
Does the CD's version used to install Windows XP Pro really matter, provided that it is a geniune OEM copy of Windows XP Pro and the PK is a legit OEM (both localised in the same region)?
Regards,
Tam

tourist.tam,
Please try validating windows again by visiting the following location: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine next click on the "Validate Windows" button in the upper right corner. What happens? The genuine site can also provide you with valuable information so please take time and review the documents.
Next please download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum. This would assist us immensely so we may analyze possible causes for a failed validation. Next we will begin formulating a resolution for what may be causing the problem.
Step 2 is telling us about the COA. Tell us:
1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.
NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

If you have a Windows XP product key and no Windows XP CD, please see the following:

er ... Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post. I am afraid this is only mildly relevant to the questions asked though. I was looking for knowledge of why my _original_ PK is not working with the original CD I own; which seems totally absurd to me that I had to use my student PK to be able to install WindowsXP (I've tried by the way to change the PK after installation and while this is not a black listed PK it wouldn't still get validated).
Regards.

I am having a similar problem, but how do you run the utility if you can't get past the settup screen asking for the product Id?Tuesday, March 16, 2010 9:48 PM

This is in no way helpful. I have the same error message but I am trying to do something different. I am trying to use a VLK and Symantec/Altiris Imaging software and I get the same message after I run sysprep. There is no way to run the validation tool because you can't get that far. I thought it had something to do with SP3 but that doesn't seem to be the case. Invalid Product ID is different than Product Key and that seems to be very difficult for people to understand.

Hello Adam Griggs,
The error mention is quite often the result of mixing the sales channel of product keys used and the sales channel of the media used to prepare the image.
