19 MB Unallocated after WHS 2011 disk format RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to figure out why WHS is leaving 19MB unallocated disk space.

This has happened with two external drives, one formatted over usb 2.0 the other over esata.

Both drives formatted properly and were added to server backup for off  site rotation.

If I look at the drives under device manager or server manager disk management it shows 19MB unallocated space at the end of each drive.

The data drives don't show this....but they are Advanced format drives.

The two that show it are not AF drives one 500GB the other 400GB.

    Who knows why?

  • I believe it's effectively a rounding error. The drive geometry, aligning partitions on appropriate boundaries, etc. all play into this. It just isn't possible to force Windows to use the space if it leave it unallocated.

Since it's probably a pretty large drive I wouldn't worry about it. Consider: 19 MB on a 1 TB drive is .0019%, in round numbers...

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
