I recently got a new computer and didnt want the proprietary sony software installed so i used an oem version of a Vista x64 disk. I Cannot get the product key to change to the license on the bottom i get an error stating
"The product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows Vista product key
Please check your product key, and type it again"
I have typed it about a dozen times and had friends double check my typing.
I have gone through the steps of validating the COA on the Microsoft website and still no luck.
I have run the Diagnostic test and here are the results.
Please note: The product key listed here is not the product key I have a COA stuck to the bottom of the laptop.
any help is appreciated.
Oh one last note, I have tried using the key in both the windows install period and inside the windows environment. both in safe mode and normal.
I get the same error message.

I have heard mixed results regarding using an COA key in Retail software. I suggest contacting your local Activation Call Center and a) have them check that key and b) see if they know for sure if you can use a COA key in a Retail Vista.
You can find the phone number for your Activation Call Center by clicking the start button, type: slui 4 and hit the 'Enter' key. In the window that opens, pick your location and the phone number, for that location, will be shown.
Note: the Product Key listed in your Diagnostic Report is the Default Key automaticly used when Vista is installed without a Valid Product Key.
Thank you, Darin MS

Oh and you may also want to confirm that the version of Vista (that you now have installed) is the same version as the one that the computer originally came with.
