Software Licensing Service problems RRS feed

  • Hi, I've been running a full retail copy of Ultimate 64 for the last few months without problems, until recently.  First, it started getting extremely sluggish, which may not be related to the rest of my issues, but it did happen about the same time.  Next I've been unable to open control panel, play games or personalise my display, and my copy of Windows doesn't pass validation online, which through searching I have found out is because the software licensing service has stopped.  My problem is that it won't restart.  Another thread here mentioned running a system scan with sfc/scannow, but this gave me a message saying it was unable to fix certain files and a link to a log file that it won't let me open!  System restore also won't work!  I've tried scanning for viruses with three different programs and nothing shows up with this either.   What is the next step?  I could back up important files and reinstall windows, but the computer is mainly used for photography, so I've got an almost-full 500GB hard drive which would need to be backed up and for various reasons this would be a real pain.  I've tried repairing my installation by booting with the Windows disc, this didn't find anything to repair either.  Do I have other options?

    Thank you for providing me with the MGA Diagnostic results. In your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT) report it shows the error code "Online Validation Code: 0x80070426". This means that the Software Licensing Service has stopped. Windows Vista uses this service to check itself and confirm it is Genuine. When the service is stopped, Windows Vista is unable to confirm its own Genuine status and may show Genuine or Non-Genuine. The fact that the Service has stopped is also, most likely, the cause of other issues you may be experiencing (such as not having access to the Control Panel).

     

    Please try the first set of steps and if it does not resolve the issue, move on to the next set.

     

    The first sets of steps are how to set the Software Licensing Service to start at each Windows Vista Start-up.

     

    1. Click Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  services.msc

    2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard

    3. The Services window should now open

    4. Scroll down to Software Licensing, then right-click on it and select Properties

    5. Under the General tab, click Stop button.

    6. Set the Startup Type to Automatic, and then click Apply

    7. Next, under Service Status, click Start button.

    8. Last, restart your computer.   

     

    The second set of steps is the Manual steps to Force Start the Software Licensing Service. Once you type the net start slsvc command and hit Enter, if you receive any error, then, for some reason, Windows Vista is not processing the command correctly and the issue is larger than just a Software Licensing problem. In which case, I would suggest contacting Windows Vista support below: http://support.microsoft.com
     

     

    If you have access to the Start button:

    1) Click Start button

    2) Type: cmd in the Start Search field

    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

     

    If you do not have access to the Start button:

    1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser

    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3) Find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

    First I would recommend using a secondary hard drive to back up all of photos. An example would be using an external hard drive or installing another internal hard drive. This would help prevent any catastrophe issues. Currently it appears your software licensing service has stopped. First p
    lease run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Test (MGADT) so that I may analyze the results for verification and see if there may be other complications.


    By clicking the link below, you will download the MGADT.  Then click the Run button. Then click the Run button again. Then click the Continue button to perform the diagnostic. The Windows tab should show, click the Copy button to paste your report to the clipboard.  Then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum by adding a post in it and pressing Ctrl V (to paste the text). Clicking the OK button will clear the Diagnostic window. Here is the download link:

    Please tell us about the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for your copy of Windows Vista.

    1. What edition/version of Windows Vista is titled?

    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4. Please provide the customer scenario you are experiencing.

  • Hi Stephen, thanks for your reply.  Luckily I do have a external back-up of most of my photos, so any loss of data would be more of a nuisance than anything else.  Here are the results from theMGADT which I have just ran.  In answer to your questions:  I am running Vista Ultimate, and the COA does not have OEM Software, OEM product or the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering.  I don't understand what you mean when you say "please provide the customer scenario you are experiencing".  Do you need me to explain in more detail something from my above post?
