Questions asked and replied to but not answered. but they are marked as answered.

    General discussion

  • I looked, but I did not see a better place to post this.

Ok so someone ask a question and someone else replies with something that is not an answer.

Example: Q: How do I ... A: You need to post in some other forum. Yea it's a bad example and in that case we all understand. However I have seen a number of post that are marked as answered that are completely wrong and even within the thread the answer is proven wrong, but no one ever goes back and changes the 'Answer'.

The whole purpose of having an 'answer' is so the next person that comes along doesn't have to read 37 post to actually find the answer. Furthermore I don't think ' you posted in the wrong forum, go here ' should ever be marked as an answer, it should just be closed.

    Ideas suggestions answers ?

  • Don't ask me. I believed that marking a post an answer, but that answerer wasn't the original thread starter, is probably the public's opinion on that matter.

I can mark myself, or "propose" this post, as the answer. It's relative easy to see, hard to understand, as it involves philosophy, psychiatry, and moral issues.

Oh, and you don't close a thread. You never do. It will discourage discussion among older peers.

  • I totally agree with you.

The practice of marking a posting as 'answered' because no-one has replied in a couple of months completely devalues the usefulness of seeing a posting marked as answered.

I'd like to suggest an 'Abandoned' indication for threads that aren't answered but have had no response for an extended period of time.

I find it really frustrating to see a screen full of postings marked as answered, only to find that the answer does nothing to resolve the original question.

Better to flag an unanswered post as abandoned, then purge that post after a few months.

  • Yea, but you have to check them all to confirm. In which case they may have this contracted out and require like 80-85% answer rate etc... which would make little sense, but that never stop anyone before.

I can't speak to others, but I come here and post when I can't find the answer readily availible. I expect between the pubic random users and the paid microsoft support I should be able to get an answer (even if it is not the answer I want). However because so many wrong or unrelated post are marked as the answer I can spend hours searching and reading useless info and arguements etc... before I find an actual answer and even then it may not be the current answer, because information can change from patch, version, etc... to the next.

I don't know a solution for the latter part off the top of my head, but the first part is simple stop marking wrong answers and unrelated info as the answer.

Another solution would be to let the search engines index all content instead of just the selective content that they apparently are being given.  Then the "answer" you found would be determined more by your search skills than by brute force browsing.
