  • Question

  • I started on this problem with sfc /scannow which actually came up empty.  Then I came across this forum and the diagnostics people were posting here.  Yes, I see the chorus of "tampered files" but what would I do next?

Please note: I have Windows Ultimate.  I don't recall doing anything with language packs.  I think I "hid" the optional updates in Windows Update awhile ago.  I wasn't sure if having Ultimate meant the language pack issue applied to me.

Downloaded and ran Microsoft Genuine Advantage Tool (1.9.0027.0)

  • One thing you can try is to reinstall the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers.  A recent update may have caused a problem with yours.  I prefer the HP download site at

    http://bit.ly/xmcovN (shortened).

Rerun the MGADiag report and post in your next reply.

If updating the drivers does not work I have another concern.  Where did you get your copy of Ultimate?  Your product ID is very close to the product IDs we have been seeing in this forum that were from counterfeit copies of Windows purchased by others in the online auctions.  If you purchased your copy from an online auction or discount website you have probably been scammed.  The PID from your report:

    Windows Product ID: 00426-069-2039795-86058

The field that concerns me is the second one, 069.  These counterfeit copies being sold on eBay and the Amazon Marketplace have been producing a PID with 065 to 068 in the second field of the PID.  These are numbers used to indicate MSDN subscriber product keys.  It may be that the 069 numbers are MSDN also.  MSDN keys are not-for-resale keys and are only valid for the subscriber's use.  Microsoft blocks such MSDN keys when an abuse is discovered.

Perhaps Darin Smith (MSFT) will check your key to see if it is MSDN or from another subscription program.

If this does turn out to be from an MSDN account and you are not the subscriber who was issued this product key, it would be invalid for your use.  It takes a while for MS to detect and complete processing of abused keys so don't be surprised if the key has been valid for a period of time.

To see how good these knock-offs are becoming, see

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzqNNiOM0cs

It is important to buy Windows from a rock solid seller like the Microsoft Store or Amazon Corp (not an affiliate).

As for language packs, the first set of file mismatches do not indicate the use of Vistalizator.  The use of Vistalizator on an edition of Windows prior to an upgrade to Ultimate might show up as an issue but that is not indicated here.

  • I was an MSDN Pro subscriber (my personal subscription) when I installed this copy of Ultimate.  My subscription expired in December.  I mistakenly thought perhaps that was why I was getting the message, so I DID change product keys.

However, the product key I changed to is still a valid MSDN subscription that I pulled down yesterday.  It is the subscription provided to me by my new employer.  Once I got this new job where they supplied MSDN subscriptions, I figured I didn't need to maintain my personal Pro subscription anymore.  I can go to the MSDN site and get 9 more keys if I had to.

The original install was from the DVD that shipped in the mail to me when I was personally subscribing.  Again, I DID change the key (yesterday) because I had thought maybe since I let my personal subscription lapse, it was revoked or something.  I don't think this was the cae based on my understanding of what happens at the end of a subscription.

I purchased my personal subscription from software wholesale international, and they not only were reputable, MSFT seemed to think my subscription was good.  My personal Windows Live ID logged into MSDN Downloads, got keys, downloaded ISOs at the Pro level.

(I'll try updating the intel drivers and report... thanks)

  • MSDN product keys never expire, even after you stop subscribing to MSDN.  At least now I know that 069 is MSDN.  Glad your usage is valid.

Did you reinstall the drivers I linked you to?  The mismatch profile appears very similar to other recent reports that reinstallation of the Rapid Storage Technology Drivers fixed.

  • Darin,

Can I gather from this that the Chinese counterfeits were probably made before the 069s started generating in the PIDs?

I don’t believe there’s any order in that sense to the CID’s, Colin. It’s more likely to relate to the specific channel (MSDN/TechNet/BizSpark), or Goelocation. (but then I could be wrong again <g>)

  •   Unfortunately, I don't have any data on the 069 CID, other than this particular key is showing as "Retail MSDN" which (as Noel mentioned) can translate to a number of related programs such as TechNet, BizSpark, MSDN proper or possibly even some other (new?) related program.

I will see if I can get more information about this CID, from my side,  but in the mean time, keep an eye out and see if we can piece together what program these keys are being issued through.

    Thanks,

    Darin MS

  • This is the first 069 I have seen.  I will help you watch for more.

It might also be useful to know how far the allocation for the subscription CIDs extends.  I assume a block is reserved but what are its boundaries?  Of specific interest are the subscription programs that allow multiple activations because those would be the target for many of the counterfeiting schemes.

btw, what does the "C" in "CID" stand for?
