Console wont open and Shares no longer available

Question

I'm new to the forum, so please be kind...
I've had my home brewed WHS running for several months now with only a few snags, until today...
Here is my configuration:
- P4 3.2GHz, 3GB, ASUS P5AD2 Premium MoBo
- OS Drive - Seagate Barracuda 200GB 7200.7
- Pooled drives - Five - WD Caviar Green 1TB
- Non pooled drives - WD Caviar Green 1TB, WD Caviar Green 1.5TB (Non pooled drives for SageTV files)
Four drives are installed internally with SATA cables. The other four drives were in an external case with individual SATA cables run from the MoBo to each drive. In an effort to simplify my setup I wanted to move my external drives to a Multilane cable. I installed all the necessary hardware, booted up WHS, logged in on the server, and now I am having the following issues:
- When I try to launch the console I get the hourglass for a second, then the console window flashes on the screen for a split second and then nothing.
- When I try to open any of the folders in the the shared drives folder I get an error message.
- But, if I open up the D:\shares\ I can access all my files.
- All of the drives show up in Disk Management.
- My SageTV extenders can not connect to the WHS SageTV server
- None of my PCs can see the WHS either
Any tips on what may be causing these issues?
Thanks in advance for the help,
Brian
Update: I an effort to isolate the issue, I replaced the multilane cable with the original SATA cables, and I am having the same issues.Saturday, May 23, 2009 5:22 PM

Brian,
Looks like the system has a problem with the network connection?
Logg on to the server:
* Does it have network access (i.e. can you see or ping any of your client PC's in your network, try to acces \\{yourservername})?
* Check the eventlist for network/NIC related errors.
* Check your NIC's drivers from the Device Manager.
* Run "ipconfig /all" from the command prompt to check the servers IP/DNS configuration?
* Check your network cabling.
* Check and/or reconfigure your network connection.

No home server like Home ServerSaturday, May 23, 2009 10:22 PMModerator -
The network connections are fine.
When I am sitting at the machine, I can access files on the server via D:/Shares/..., but I get an error message when I try to access files via \\{servername }.
After examining the Event Log, these 3 errors are repeated over and over:
Client Backup server failed at d:\wssg_src\whs_pp2\qhs\src\backup\util\diskfile.cpp(145)

Persistent Drive Letter Service failed: Starting service: No attempts to start the service have been made since the last boot.

Unexpected error 0x48f from CreateFile on D:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\Commit.dat: The device is not connected.
I hope this helps shed some light on what is happening.

Hi Brian,
did you try to reboot the server?
Eventually only a service is not started after last reboot - this seems to happen from time to time, if WHS components are getting upgraded. And yesterday was patch day for WHS.
In worst case one of your disks may have failed, but you should see this in the console and in the event logs.
Best greetings from Germany
