  • Hi amirali487,

OK, all that means is that your computer's Hardware ID is different enough, then the first time you activated, that Vista isn't sure it is installed on the same computer.

The computer's Hardware ID is made up of most of the hardware IDs of most of the hardware that makes up the computer (hard drives, memory, DVD drives and such) the computer's Hardware ID can change when new hadware is added or replaced.  It can sometimes also change when some Drivers are installed (The Drivers can sometimes change the hardware ID of the hardware it is controlling).

To make a long story short, the "Key is already in use" message is just Vista's way of informing you that the Product Key may be already in use by another computer (the one with your computer's old Hardware ID). Since you know the key is only being used in one computer, you don't need to worry about it (I completly agree the error message could be more...informative).

Lastly, the message also means that you need to Activate Vista by Phone, instead of over the Internet. Vista should give you the option to Activate by Phone, but if you can't find the option, you can follow the Alternate steps, below:

    1) Click the Start button
    2) Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key
    3) Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button
    4) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone
    5) Follow the rest of the Activate by Phone wizard and you are done..should only take about 5 min.

    Hope that helps,
    Darin MS

  • Hello amirali487,

I do not see anything wrong in your Diagnostic Report. Would you provide more detail regarding your issue.

When does Vista ask for the Product Key? What happens when you enter the Retail product key again? What happens when you try to Activate?

    Thank you,
    Darin MS
