Windows Validation, Why can't it just work again? RRS feed

  • Question

  • For some reason microsoft thinks my vista is not a genuine version. It is.. this is the part which is annoying.  I have had my laptop for about a year and then all of a sudden it just stop working.  I keep getting an error which says:

you may be a victim of software counterfeiting: to use all microsoft windows features, such as the windows aero colour scheme and its associated visual elements; get the latest updates; and recieve product support, your copy of microsoft windows must be validated as genuine

and i go to resolve it, by validating my copy, and i get this:

This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation. Either an unauthorized change was made to your Windows license or a software program installed on this computer is not currently compatible with Windows Vista

i access control panel, nothing comes up. I can only use internet if I plug in an Ethernet cable. I tried the solutions they gave me, but they dont work.  this is really frustrating and I had to work really hard to get the money to buy my laptop and now it doesn't work.  please tell me I just didnt waste my money.

    thanks

  • Hello Sal1337,

The core of your issue centers on the line in your Diagnostic Report that reads:

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\gdi32.dll[6.0.6001.18159]

This means the file has been Tampered, Modified or has become Corrupt. Vista see this as an attack to bypass it's Licensing security.

To resolve the issue, you need to either repair file .

First try repairing Windows using System Restore:

    1)    Reboot Vista into Safe Mode

    2)    Click the ‘Start’ button

    3)    In the Start Search field, type: System Restore and hit “Enter” keyboard key

    4)    Select "Choose Different Restore Point", Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days", select the restore point that corresponds to the date Before you first noticed the issue.

    5)    Click the "Next" button.

    6)    Reboot back into Normal mode

    7)    Vista should no longer be in Reduced Functionality mode

If that doesn't work, we'll try doing a System Scan. The scan will look for bad Vista files and will attempt to repair them, if possible.

    1)    Login to Vista in Normal Mode (not safe mode)

    2)    Launch an Internet Browser

    3)    Type: %windir%\system32\ in the browser's address field

    4)    Scroll down till you find the file cmd.exe

    5)    Right-click the file and select 'Run as Administrator'

    6)    In the CMD window, type: sfc /scannow

    7)    Reboot twice and see if that resolves the issue.

If neither of these sets of steps resolves the issue, my only other suggestions would be either to contact Vista support at http://support.microsoft.com or reinstall Vista.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  •   In order to receive the best support, we request all users initially download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this thread.

If you do not have access to the Start Button:

    1)    Login to Vista and click the option that brings up Internet Explorer.

    2)    Type: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 into the browser address bar.

    3)    A window will come up asking if you want to “Run” or “Save”, Select “Run”

    4)    When the program runs, click the “Continue” button, then click the “Copy” button.

    5)    Return to this thread http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/thread/8e481514-429d-4753-9c0a-bc92643c5f73.

    6)    In a reply post, paste the Diagnostic Report.

    Thank you,

  • Hello Sal1337,

The core of your issue centers on the line in your Diagnostic Report that reads:

    File Scan Data-->

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Ok so the date I needed to restore my computer wasn't there because it was too long ago so I was gonig to do the second option.  However when I go to run cmd.exe it says "Not enough quota to process this command"  What should I do?
    Thanks

  • Hello Sal1337,

That "Not enough quota" error is not a Non-Genuine or Anti-piracy related message.

From what I have gathered, it appears to relate to the amount of Ram allocated to the OS. In addition, a number of people that have had a Non-Genuine issue related to a Malware infection have also received this "Not enough quota" error. This suggests to me that it may also be caused by a Malware infection.

In the past, some people have been able to get around the quota error by rebooting and trying again. Reports indicate it can take anywhere from 1 to 5+ reboots for finally not receive that error.

Unfortunatlally, that all I know about that quota error.  Any addition assistance with that error would need to be handled by Windows support (http://support.microsoft.com).

Sorry I couldn't be more help,
    Darin MS

  • Have you had the same problem, Sal1337, are you wasting your money too, are you going to buy a new computer?

  • Hi Darin,

I'm, getting the Not Genuine problem as Sal1337 was describing in her post and the Diagnostic Report is attached below as you asked. I had my copy of vista installed when I bought this computer and I only started getting this not genuine message a month or so ago after I downloaded some updates from Microsoft, don't know if that had anything to do with it but your help will be much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Conners.
