Server Backup - Space Used on Disk

Question
-
I ran a server backup last night to one of the 500GB drives I rotate offsite.
I only selected the server system files and the shares that contain important data.
I notice the backup disk cannot be looked at directly in other operating systems. I also cannot seem to determine how much space is free on the backup drive.
Is there a way to determine how much space is being used by the server backup?
Thanks,
Chad

The server backup uses the Windows Server backup tool to back up/restore disks. This uses a vhd format, which is why you can't read the disk on another system. Effectively, the entire disk is used by backup. The server backup gui in the Dashboard isn't complete yet (didn't make it into this build) but there will be additional information available in a future build.
That said, if there is specific information that you want to see that's not there today, you should submit a suggestion or bug report on Connect .

If I mount a USB backup from WHS Vail on a server 2008 (other than WHS Vail) will I be able to recover individual (or all) files?

Chad,
As Ken indicated this information is not available through the VAIL public beta Dashboard.
To see how much space is used by a server backup disk you can however RDP to the VAIL desktop and start "Windows Server Backup".
On the window presented find "Destination Usage" (bottom-right) and select your backup drive. For this you need the backup drive connected and configured for server backup.- Theo.

Can Gizmo 2.7 be used to mount the backup drive on a Windows 7 Machine?
TomSaturday, June 5, 2010 11:17 PM -
I have no idea. I don't use Gizmo, so I don't even know if it supports the .vhd format in general, never mind the differencing disk format that backup uses.
Why don't you try it and see?

Why bother with additional software? Windows 7 can natively mount VHD

Don't you need XP Mode for that, Paul?

I don't know if you "need" XPmode, but you can mount or create a VHDdirectly in Disk Management...Action - Attach VHD--Dave N.MS-MVP (Mail)Windows 7 Ultimatehttp://download.live.com/wlmail"Ken Warren" wrote in message news:1c13b8a2-0576-4f1e-bd16-8f55b6b0e607...> Don't you need XP Mode for that, Paul?> --------------------------------------------------------------------------------> I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
