Backup hangs at 1% - Requires a reboot to cancel. RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • OneCare backup was consistently hanging at 1% and I was not able to cancel it without crashing my PC and rebooting.  I searched this forum and didn't find a solution so I logged a request per the advice found in other posts.  Microsoft suggested that the problem might be caused by a corrupted backup engine and provided a solution to me the same day.  I tried it - it worked.  I thought I'd pass it along as I see a number of questions regarding this issue on this forum.

    Normal disclaimer: I'm not responsible if this causes issues on your PC etc., etc.

    Here is the procedure that worked for me

    Step 1: Remove PX Engine
    ====================
    1. Navigate to C:\Program Files.
    2. Open the Microsoft Windows OneCare Live folder.
    3. Locate and open the Staging folder.
    4. Right click "PxEngine.msi" and choose "Uninstall" option to remove PX Engine.
    5. Restart the computer.

    Step 2: Manually install PX Engine
    =========================
    1. Navigate to C:\Program Files
    2. Open the Microsoft Windows OneCare Live folder.
    3. Locate and open the Staging folder.
    4. Double click "PxEngine.msi" to reinstall it.
    5. Restart the computer.

    Retry the backup.
    Hope this helps someone out there.
